Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

Yeah, I heard that. I find it hard to believe, given the amount of actual evidence that pointed directly to OJ, including the deep cuts on his hands the next day that he "couldn't remember" how he got. I think if I got deep cuts on my hands, I'd remember exactly how I got them.

I think it's more likely that this detective wants to make a couple of million dollars on his book.

Marsha didn't prove her case beyond a reasonable doubt. It happens. I watched the entire thing on TV since I was home with my toddler.

But this is admirable. FWIW, I thought OJ's acquittal was justified even though I think he really did it. I was a student at the time so I was able to watch most of the trial.

Perhaps I'm missing your point, but I don't really see how that makes any difference. I don't think anyone (other than perhaps a small, psychotic minority) really feels like GZ is a cold-blooded murderer. Most feel that he pursued someone he shouldn't have and reacted (to something) to the point of pulling the trigger.

But even if all of the above is true, that can still be second-degree murder depending on the circumstances.

You are missing my point indeed. I'm amazed that she is being so gracious, given the circumstances. Sheds a different light on her, early on she seemed like (was being portrayed as) an angry woman who was taking advantage of the situation. (Trayvon T-shirs etc) This statement proves to me that she is a charitable caring Christian woman. I just thought it should be shown is all.

But I do think that 2nd degree is a pretty big deal, and I bet it's more manslaughter. I think they are shooting high on purpose.

I don’t think it’s supposed to, other than maybe public opinion. Personally I think it’s admirable that she can forgive Zimmerman. Were it my son, even if he did assault the person that killed him, I don’t think I could do the same.

I agree. IMHO, I think they both sort of went hunting for trouble, it found them, and GZ used the most handy last resort. They both "asked for it" and the one with the gun is alive.

This is now a tragic chapter in US History, that will continue with nationwide curfews and racial polarity. I understand the riots after the deaths RFK and MLK, but I can't understand the "need" in the TM case. A lot of pent-up hate, combined with irresponsibility, requires a trigger.

Nowhere in any of this, is the irresponsibility of the parents; Zimmerman's, Martin's, for those whose kids stormed the Walgreens, for those whose kids swung hammers, for those whose kids edited 911 tapes. One effect of irresponsibility is an actual cause for blaming others for misfortune.

On all levels, our educational system has failed. The three R's are now racism, rape (especially gutting resources), and (false and misleading) reporting.

Pretty ****ing much this right here.....And it is a lose lose situation now, because I truly don't see how murder 2 is appropriate, and 'justice' seems like it only means a murder conviction to the african american community. No murder 2, no 'justice' is how they seem to feel. Its really a damn shame.

Special prosecutor Angela Corey announced Wednesday at a news conference in Jacksonville, Florida, that Zimmerman was going to be charged with second-degree murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

"We did not come to this decision lightly," Corey, who was appointed by Florida Gov. Rick Scott to re-examine the case after public outcry over the initial decision not to arrest Zimmerman, said at a news conference in Jacksonville.

Zimmerman shot and killed Martin, 17, in the town of Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, who took the case late Wednesday after Zimmerman's previous attorneys withdrew, said his client would plead not guilty and that he would seek his release on bond. Zimmerman, 28, was scheduled for an initial hearing Thursday at 1:30 p.m. ET.

O’Mara said on TODAY he was surprised the prosecutor brought second degree murder charges against his client.

“I was. Again I’ve only seen the evidence that has been presented through the media. But I was surprised that they charged him at that level," he said.

Martin's mom suggested that Zimmerman, who claims he killed Martin in self-defense, should apologize if he is remorseful.

“One of the things that I still believe in: A person should apologize when they really -- when they are actually remorseful for what they've done,” Fulton said.

To be fair it showed an ugliness on both sides. On the flip side of the media, there was an opposite faction trying to paint trayvon as some black thug who had it coming. I don't think zimmerman will be found guilty of murder 2. But I think martins parents can win in other ways. The police handled this embarrassingly badly and I feel like a better handling of the situation would have made this less of a national issue. Regardless of race, no parent should feel like the police aren't taking the murder of their son seriously. The big win for Martin will be the HOA. For me, the biggest case of dumbassery is how they let a guy like Zimmerman with an aggressive background patrol their neighborhood with a gun. If they appointed him as neighborhood watch captain, even if in name only, how in the world can you do that without a background check or at least rigorous training. The fact that Zimmerman was calling 911 and no the police and carrying a gun indicates that he was not well trained for a big responsibility.
