Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

I think some of what you have here is exaggerated. Getting angry doesn't make anyone a murderer. I hope you're not one of these types of people that think getting angry, when warranted or on occasion is really an issue in life? If so, that covers a LOT of people and plenty of cops.

What the media ignored about Trayvon

Okay, so perhaps Z can be tempermental or gets hot under the collar. Maybe it was justified at times and others not. But here's Trayvon's issues:

In the past year or so, his social media sites showed a growing interest in drugs, in mixed martial arts-style street fighting, in a profoundly vulgar exploitation of "bitches."

It's possible that Trayvon may have been up to no good and not being recognized, since he didn't really live there but his dad's gf did, he may have just looked up to know good due to recent past events in a development hard hit with foreclosures and empty units.

What became of Witness 9 the family friend (cousin?) who accused him of abuse? She must not have been credible, or she just didn't want to testify in person. She gave lengthy accounts of his unwanted advances towards her over the years on tape.

If it were a sex case, maybe it would be relevant but it's not.

I am shocked that the Judge would allow admission of Zimmerman's past and not Martin's. To the point that If I were on the jury and I found this out afterward I'd be very upset.

No wonder people feel you are such a complete idiot.

Are you ever going to say something relevant or will we forever be condemned to listen to your fascinating tales of "rumblings" and "smoke"?...

So far your argument appears to be equivalent to "Well, it seems that Trayvon may have sneezed, and instead of saying 'God bless you' Zimmerman remained silent, which may have sparked Trayvon to try and kill Zimmerman with his bare hands...We'll just never know..."

"But we do know that Zimmerman also refused to say "God bless you" to his own wife when she sneezed several years ago!"

Absolutely not true with regards to a recorded and public 8 year history of roughly six 911 calls per year

None of them had anything like this as an outcome.

You are creating this imaginary "pattern" in your head....

The "pattern" of behavior I am talking about with the 911 call is that you have a guy who was obsessive about police work and was trying really, really hard to get a job with the police force.

It is not illogical to believe that a guy like that was trying to act like police when he was a citizen whose role is to observe and report. That he went a step too far. I doubt he was looking for a fight. But he wasn't just going to sit around and wait for the police to arrive.

I have not discounted Trayvon's past and have never doubted that Trayvon doubled back when he should have gone straight home. I think Trayvon's history shows he was capable of being aggressive, as does Zimmerman.

Right now, we know Trayvon was aggressive. We don't know if Zimmerman was but it's at least worth questioning if he was as passive as he claims in his testimony. We'll never know.

I don't want to keep ****ing repeating myself.

I have said that Trayvon was stupid, shouldn't have doubled back, and went ape shit leading to Zimmerman justifiably shooting him in self defense. And I hate the murder charge because it clearly wasn't.

I really don't know how many times I have to keep repeating that. From the moment Trayvon doubled back, he was completely in the wrong.

I did not say he was a murderer. I am saying there is a window between when he hung up the phone from 911 to the time Trayvon punched him in the face where we have to make a lot of assumptions about how the two acted. We already know that Trayvon was stupid from the beginning of the scuffle to the end.

We will never know Zimmerman's role. You don't have to acknowledge that he was aggressive that night. THer'es no proof that he was. But let's not try to blow off Zimmerman's shady history, just as I have not blown off that Trayvon had a shady past too.
