Neighborhood watch captain shoots innocent black youth and doesn't even get arrested

http://news.yahoo.com/family-florida...044537742.html

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of a 17-year-old African-American boy shot to death last month in his gated Florida community by a white Neighborhood Watch captain wants to see the captain arrested, the family's lawyer said on Wednesday.

Trayvon Martin was shot dead after he took a break from watching NBA All-Star game television coverage to walk 10 minutes to a convenience store to buy snacks including Skittles candy requested by his 13-year-old brother, Chad, the family's lawyer Ben Crump said.

"He was a good kid," Crump said in an interview, adding that the family would issue a call for the Watch captain's arrest at a news conference on Thursday. "On his way home, a Neighborhood Watch loose cannon shot and killed him."

Trayvon, who lived in Miami with his mother, had been visiting his father and stepmother in a gated townhome community called The Retreat at Twin Lakes in Sanford, 20 miles north of Orlando.

As Trayvon returned to the townhome, Sanford police received a 911 call reporting a suspicious person.

Although names are blacked out on the police report, Crump and media reports at the time of the shooting identified the caller as George Zimmerman who is listed in the community's newsletter as the Neighborhood Watch captain.

Without waiting for police to arrive, Crump said, Zimmerman confronted Trayvon, who was on the sidewalk near his home. By the time police got there, Trayvon was dead of a single gunshot to the chest.

"What do the police find in his pocket? Skittles," Crump said. "A can of Arizona ice tea in his jacket pocket and Skittles in his front pocket for his brother Chad."

Zimmerman could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening at a phone number listed for him on the community's newsletter.

Crump said the family was concerned that police might decide to consider the shooting as self defense, and that police have ignored the family's request for a copy of the original 911 call, which they think will shed light on the incidents.

"If the 911 protocol across the country held to form here, they told him not to get involved. He disobeyed that order," said Ryan Julison, a spokesman for the family.

"He (Zimmerman) didn't have to get out of his car," said Crump, who has prepared a public records lawsuit to file on Thursday if the family doesn't get the 911 tape. "If he never gets out of his car, there is no reason for self-defense. Trayvon only has skittles. He has the gun."

Since Trayvon, a high school junior who wanted to be a pilot, was black and Zimmerman is white, Crump said race is "the 600 pound elephant in the room."

"Why is this kid suspicious in the first place? I think a stereotype must have been placed on the kid," Crump said.

what matters is that here we have a young man (not a child) walking alone on rainy night, on private property he had no business being in.

I didn't follow the case but doesn't Martin's brother lives here and he wanted to visit him? And who appointed Zimmerman as the sheriff of his neighborhood. Excuse my ignorance but does Zimmerman being the captain of the neighborhood watch give him any extra authority and power?

Both Alan Dershowitz and Scott Turrow say he will be found not guilty. From where I'm standing there are two facts. George Zimmerman killed Tayyon Martin and ignored the police operator and the rules of the neighborhood watch not to interfere in a possible crime. As a result Martin is dead and I think he has to pay for it. Is it murder 2? Maybe not, I'm not a lawyer.

Do any of you realize how hard it is to get expelled from a HS in Miami?

Not suspended, but THROWN OUT.

As in DON'T COME BACK.

That kid was ****ed up. He was ****ed up to the point where his mother could no longer deal with it. She asked the baby daddy to help and it the kids hour of need, the baby daddy IGNORED HIM. He was too busy dropping the hammer on his girlfriend. That couldn't wait.

The kid was a a psycho and his acts of violence were a cry for help. Nobody was there for him. they never were there for him.

He's dead because nobody taught him any social skills.
Nobody taught him much of anything. His teacher was probably the tv set.

Sooner or later, he was gonna WIND UP DEAD OR IN JAIL.

It happened sooner.

So he has to wait until the injuries he's sustaining are "life threatening" before he resorts to defending himself the only way he can...dude...come on.

In the heat of a fight, panic probably sets in if you are on the bottom, there is a guy on top of you, he's broken your nose is pounding your head into the pavement. You don't know how far this guy is willing to go, but so far he has completely overpowered you and is showing no signs of stopping...so you are just supposed let him keep beating on you because you are pretty sure the injuries you've sustained thus far are not life threatening.

That's insane on the face of it...

In the court of public opinion, Zimmerman was unfairly labeled very guilty and "up to no good" before the facts came out. This isn't news. People are often judgmental and overreactive about profiling people. There is nothing wrong with profiling and calling the police. Different story when they try to do something about it. There is so much shit that can go wrong and any break in protocol increases the chances of shit going wrong. What if an innocent suspect panics or freaks out? What if the innocent person gets confrontational? What if the pursuer provokes, by cursing, hammering the person with questions, etc... What if the pursuer misinterprets what the suspect is doing and shoots him/her on the spot? For as much as you talk about stopping situations, you leave out how many times you create a situation that didn't have to happen if left alone.

Not to mention there are a lot of crazy people, meatheads, overreactive people. You want THESE people to patrol our streets? Or would you agree that police screening at least helps improve the likelihood that sane people are patrolling? You also realize that citizens on patrol requires special licensing to do armed patrol and most neighborhood watch groups ban the practice, right? You do realize that CCW specifically instructs people to observe and report, and nothing more, unless there is clear danger, right? Now, if you're saying that we should expand citizens on patrol or neighborhood watch programs so that we have proper screening and training procedures so we have more well-equipped, well-trained ordinary citizens to handle these situations, that's fine. But while you talk about cops making mistakes, they're going to make a LOT less mistakes than an ordinary person who isn't screened or trained to do that.

The idea that ordinary citizens should proactively put themselves BEYOND observe and report in non-threatening situations is a terrible idea.

When I'm visiting a friend's apartment, it's fine if you're going to call the cops. But if some creeper starts following me around, or if he starts badgering me with questions rudely, I'm going to get pissed. And all of us would. This is again not saying this happened here, it's going back to your point that ordinary people should have power for armed patrol without screening or training. Or that there isn't danger in ordinary people poorly equipped to handle that same exchange aren't going to make the situation worse than it needs to be. Think you would agree that you would react differently between "what are you doing here?" and "what the **** are you doing here, bitch. Get the **** off this property."

More speculation.

So. It's still not illegal or wrong doing, ESPECIALLY when you look at the context of the break-ins in his OWN back yard. You're the one who was accusing him of profiling as in it being a bad thing.

Where did I say that in this thread? You're using a strawman here. Where did I say cops were being a terrible thing? More assuming and speculating. Cops themselves have even said, during the gun control debates, that they can't always protect us. It's a fact that some time must pass when one places a call to them. They arrive after crimes are committed more often due to this. I have no qualms with how the cops acted here. You're really reaching and your preachy.

So. It's still a free country and there's no law saying a private citizen can't do it....and here it was valid.

Cops have been accused of profiling too. Some of them claim it's necessary.

IN my scenario above, you would have shot a man who turns out is more innocent than we realized. All because we made a rash assumption.

What scenario was that?

There you go again with your embellishments: "vigilantes" and "empowering people" to do this.

Meanwhile our own national govt wants ordinary citizens to act like block snitches these days.

If Z were acting as a vigilante he would have never called the cops.

So that wasn't the point or can you not read. Z wanted to know where he was going so he'd know when the cops came. He did not want him to get away. His owns words show that.

We don't know if he was high. There was just a small amount in his system. I never said it made him aggressive, but it could have lead to him being a bit paranoid or led to misjudgment.

Two of whom have guns in their families, one who used to carry conceal. One who thought the protests were riots. Two with family lawyers. Let's hope they use the facts and the law and don't over rely on emotion. This is why O'Mara needed to use more passion in his closing statements though. However, it's been reported that's not his style anyway.
