Did Football Kill Junior?

S I am listening to 610 on the way home and Nick Wright is talking all this shit about how playing football professionally kills the players.

Yes, we know the physical pounding takes some years off a player's life. But he was talking about the depression and such that players may experience after they retire and what not.

I have to call total BS on this.

Edit: I am not saying football didn't cause the depression. I am saying the way Nick Wright was trying to downplay other causes of depression vs. playing in the NFL was bunk.

I have to imagine that going from pro bowler to opening supermarkets, may get you depressed,
and concussions do not help

Head trauma damages brain neurons, neurons transmit messages throughtout the brain via chemicals known as neurotransmitters, serotonin is a neurotransmitter and a lack of serotonin is a common cause of depression as well as anxiety disorders. Decreased neurons means decreased transmissions of neurotransmitters such as serotonin throughout the brain which means increased risk of depression, especially in conjunction with other issues he apparently faced.

In short, all depression is not considered equal. And that is without even going into the different levels, severities, frequecies, and intesity of symptoms. But strictly speaking of this case it is probable, due to his football history, that he had even poorer physiological brain function than the average person with a depressive disorder.

That's just like saying somebody was never convicted of a crime even though you saw them robbing the liquor store.

If nobody noticed his symptoms (or flat out ignored them) he could have had dozens of concussions and never been "diagnosed".

are there other people besides me that shudder atthe idea of Goodell and the owners using "Post Traumatic NFL Career Disorder" as an excuse to move us one step closer to the QB wearing flags in a couple of years?

or am just an insensitive prick with no compassion for the trials and tribulations of retired millionaire athletes?

LOTS of people are worried about just that.

I mentioned it earlier but I strongly believe the increase in head trauma correlates directly to the INCREASED protection the players are afforded. Put them back in leather helmets and they wouldn't throw themselves around like human missiles.

An unnecessary comment. Being an emotional badass doesn't make one a good Capitalist anymore than an ounce of compassion makes one a Marxist...being a HUMAN BEING transcends silly political stereotypes.

Is not the big hit, or the guy that gets laid out that is at the root of this. It's guys who can squat 1000 lbs getting into 3 pt stances and explode into each other 1000+ times a year. It's the constant rattling of the brain that may not even cause concussion symptoms.

I don't know what the nfl will do, but if they want to change it on the field, they would have to change the essence of the game.
