July 1st: Federal student loan rate doubles.

The Senate attempted to vote today to prevent that from happening. They were going to keep their vote revenue-neutral by closing a particular tax loophole used by the very wealthy.

It was blocked, by Republicans.

I didn't see a thread up about this. I just figured we needed to know about it.

Our students are doing exactly what Republicans and conservatives want them to -- they are proactively doing what they can to make life better for themselves by getting an education.

We're potentially rewarding them for their efforts by doubling what they will have to pay back, in order to protect a loophole for millionaires.

The Republican Party, theoretically for pulling yourself up by your bootstraps. Theoretically for simplifying the tax code. Is violating both principles, it seems, with their actions today.

We've got a couple months. Maybe things change soon.

The key to your post is "work your way up".

The trades are desperate for people who will stay clean, show up for work, want to learn the craft be it carpentry, electrician, plumber, welder.

The Welding school in Nevada Missouri has to turn away students and they have excellent opportunity when the graduate. But its hard and requires effort and desire. Ask any independent electrician or plumber how hard it is to find young people who are not pot heads and have a desire to learn and work.

I have a kid starting college next fall so this issue does get my attention but, letís deal with a little truth if that is ok with everyone. First the interest rates were temporarily dropped to 3.4% in a 2007 bill and are set to go back to 6.8 % in July. The debate is how to cover the billions of dollars in lost revenue if these discounted rates are extended. The Republicans presented a plan that covered these costs but cutting spending in Obamaís 2010 Healthcare overhaul. The Democrats killed it. What does healthcare spending have to do with education? Probably that it was a political point to show the Democrats would rather take care of deadbeats and donít care about education. The Democratic plan was to pay with additional Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes aimed at "higher" income earners. So they get to say the Republicans are protecting the rich and donít care about education. From what I have seen the so called experts claim would make a difference of about $1000 in the total cost of the loan. So about $125 a semester for a 4 year degree. As usual this is way more about politics on both sides than actually serving the public.

I worked full-time while going to school full-time (and no, folks, we aren't talking about night school). the problem with this is that, in order to succeed, I had to take the minimum number of hours a semester in order to have enough time to work (pay bills--you know, NON SCHOOL BILLS like rent, car payment, utilities, phone, insurance, etc.), which essentially led to my taking more than the standard 'four years' of undergraduate education. try to talk to people in graduate school; taking more than four years is seen as a negative.

the long and the short of this is that, unless you're living at home and mooching off mom and dad (my parents are even broker than I am), there's no WAY you're paying for school without student loans.

I'm guessing you have little to no education post-high school.

Can't we look at funneling some federal $ away from non-critical programs both domestic and abroad, look at working with states to keep state university tuition as a viable option, look at revamping the student aid program to make it more merit based (e.g. grades, field of study, etc. as criteria for aid qualification)?

How many things are we spending big $ on that are more important than educating that percentage of our population who are interested and qualified in obtaining higher education?

My brother in law's ex girlfriend is a stupid bitch who went to college to fulfill her belief that having a four year degree equates to being set for life. This strumpet racked up $70,000 in student loan debt to get a bachelors in criminal justice from a state university. She wants to be a law enforcement professional. But.....she just got her first job even though she graduated almost two years ago.

Funny thing is that she was being financially supported by my BIL while she was going to school which meant she only needed to borrow enough to cover tuition. Instead she borrowed the max she could over a five year period so that she could take a vacation, drive a nice car, and have what ever the hell she wanted.

She honestly thought that when she walked off the stage that somebody was going to be waiting to offer her a job b/c she had a "Degree".

She works part time at a juvenile detention center for $12 an hr and hates to admit that she, almighty degree holder, works a job that doesn't require a degree.

Sounds like somebody is still pissed that his brother in law's girlfriend wouldn't respond to his repeated advances for love and affection.

Its got nothing to do with me chief, I went to college and got out of it what I needed without unrealistic expectations.

My point is that the student loan system is being abused and monies are being spent on anything and everything. I'm sick of people who borrowed for college complaining about paying it back. When I took out student loans it was the bare minimum needed to get my education and paid back promptly.

In the case of my BIL's ex she will never payback the loans. Never. Like many, she has unrealistic expectations about what a college education is and how much a four year degree is really worth these days.

So if I have a 20,000$ loan I will now have to pay back 40,000$. That is how you double a loans interest rate? Interesting math.

I go to Pitt State and the first thing I learned is not to buy books from the Barnes and Noble ran book store. They are outrageous. There is a private book store right across the campus that cost my $300 for textbooks and workbooks used whereas the B&N would have cost me well over $500. Another thing I like to do is use textbooks.com or ebay. All you need is the ISBN no. plus if you buy from textbooks.com they give you extra back on buybacks.
