...don't want to make a a broad stroke, but it seems like some teachers are becoming like the media..instead of just doing their job, their own opinion is coming into play, therefore putting their own needs first.

I think there has probably always been editorializing going on in the schools. It's just that the editorializing of the past was less offensive to modern conservatives because even the liberals were conservative by today's standards. For example, controversies were over things like whether to hold your hand over your heart or simply stand at attention when reciting the pledge of allegiance instead of whether or not it was offensive to honor our country at all.

In my experience (admittedly, I'm seeing the trees, not the forest), teachers have become much, much, much more careful about sharing their personal views in the classroom in recent years. The attacks on public education by certain segments, the increased scrutiny of the profession, and the increase of kids carrying recording devices that can take your words viral make conscientious teachers very aware of what they say in their classroom.

Twenty years ago, you had a bunch of young hippies coming into the profession, and they would basically take a shit on the American flag and not worry about it because they were from a radical generation. Not so much these days, as that generation is moving on into the teacher retirement system. Once again, I'm speaking from what I see in my area as well as what I see in teacher online PLCs (professional learning communities).

In union-dominated schools with entrenched Democratic Party interests, it may be entirely different. That's not Arkansas, though.

..it won't end with "hippies getting older"....like most things, it's in the culture. I've already dealt with it in my girl's HS.

...nothing too over the top, but it's there...and to be fair..it could decrease. I sure hope so.

Ah, the good ol' days. Find me a system that deals with as much diversity as the modern American school, and let's do a comparison of what is working and what is not.

You've dealt with teachers who give their own opinion in your girl's HS? How did you respond?

One of our physics teachers is a Rush Limbaugh conservative. One of our Spanish teachers holds a bible study daily at lunch for young women students. I could go on. I'm in the South, but I am in a "liberal" town. When I was in a rural area in Arkansas, there were far far more conservatives than liberals teaching.

And the problem with just sticking to the "facts" is that the "facts" these days are politicized. Evolution, global warming, homosexuality as nature/nurture, creationism, the founding fathers, the Civil War, conservation, etc... etc... everything is political fodder in this day and age. You can't teach science, social sciences, humanities, literature, etc... without getting into some controversial territory. At least not teach it in any meaningful, relevant, compelling way that the students care about.

You seem to be suggesting that diversity causes problems. Interesting.

Diversity causes a great deal of problems. It's much more difficult to teach 30 students, 1/3 of them black, 1/4 of them Hispanic, the remaining white, and of various income levels, religious beliefs, and interests, than it is to teach 30 wasp students. There's no country that has this much diversity. There's no comparable set of data we can use. Teachers in big districts deal with this everyday, while constantly being told that a huge reason America is falling is because they are trash.

I don't think skin color differences cause nearly as many problems as cultural differences. Maybe some of us should rethink our worship of multiculturalism and consider a model based more on assimilation.
