Marvel unviels their next four projects

Marvel Unveils CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, THOR: THE DARK WORLD, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and ANT-MAN

Saturday’s Hall H panel for Marvel at Comic-Con was billed as Iron Man 3, but from previous experience we all knew to expect more goodies from Marvel Studios than just IM3. We were right, as the studio announced full, intriguing titles for Thor 2 and Captain America 2, confirmed Guardians of the Galaxy (including which characters will appear), and revealed test footage for Ant-Man with a surprise appearance by Edgar Wright.

Hit the jump for my full recap of this “update” portion of the Marvel panel. [Update: We've updated the article with concept art for the Guardians of the Galaxy movie as well as logos for all the upcoming Marvel films]

Chris-Hemsworth-Thor 2 the dark worldFeige opened the panel by saying that they’re working on four movies in active development. The first is Iron Man 3, hitting theaters on May 3rd, 2013. He then went on to reveal titles for two previously known sequels, and confirmed another property that we’d heard rumblings of in the past few weeks.

Iron Man 3 (May 3, 2013)
Thor: The Dark World (November 8, 2013)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 4, 2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy (August 1, 2014)

For fans of the comics, the subtitle “The Winter Soldier” should provide a hint as to where the Captain America sequel will go. The title is a reference to a comics storyline that will find Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) taking an integral role.

guardians-of-the-galaxy-movieFeige added that Zachary Levi has been confirmed as the character of Fandrel in the Thor sequel, and revealed the team that will be unleashed for Guardians of the Galaxy:

StarLord
Drax the Destroyer
Rocket Raccoon
Groot
Gamora

In a fantastic surprise, Feige then introduced Edgar Wright to talk about Ant-Man. Wright had been tweeting about being in London for the past few days in an effort to throw fans off, but he came out to a very warm reception.

“I’m taking the Terrence Malick approach to superheroes,” said Wright referring to the long road of development on Ant-Man.
Wright and Joe Cornish wrote two more drafts of the script last year, but they’ve been done for quite a while.

ant-man-movie-logoThey then revealed test footage that Wright shot for Ant-Man, after Wright toyed for a bit with the audience saying they wouldn’t really want to see a clip of stuff with wires and blue screens in it. It’s completely unfinished since they shot it two weeks ago, but they showed the footage anyway because Marvel absolutely owns Comic-Con.

The footage opened with Ant-Man sitting on a ledge in an air conditioning vent that lead to a hallway guarded by two agents. The costume was pretty metallic looking, and he snuck through the vent hole and started running down the hallway. He morphed to normal size, shocking the guards, then morphed back down to ant size and kept running. Still in “ant size” he leapt up and punched one of the guys in the face, knocking the spit out of him, then he ran and attacked the other guard.

The footage was obviously rough, but I thought the big/small effects worked great. Wright found a way to make Ant-Man’s power work in a cool and useful way on screen, while still allowing room for the playful tone that he does so well. While I was hoping we’d see someone like Simon Pegg play the role just for fun in the test footage, the actor was wearing the Ant-Man helmet the entire time so we never saw his face. The lights then came back up.

“I’ve been doing one second of that for the last six years,” quipped Wright
Wright confirmed that the costume seen in the test footage will most likely be what makes the final film. He described it as a mix between the Silver Age and contemporary Ant-Man, adding “Ant-Man will kick your ass one inch at a time.”
Wright said there’s no casting to announce, but “revealed” that Ant-Man has been here in Hall H all day, pulling out an Ant-Man title card and putting it on the table next to him.

Wright then left the stage to make way for the Iron Man 3 panel, but these bits of news from Marvel were met with wild applause from the audience. Hit the comments to discuss the goings-on from today’s Marvel panel, and read Matt’s recap of Iron Man 3 right here. [Update: Simon Pegg tweeted that he, Nick Frost, and Wright start filming The World's End in 10 weeks, then Wright will film Ant-Man sometime next year.]

Looks like Joaquin Phoenix is going to be Doctor Strange.

I'm ok with this. (although he is a bit short for the role, the overall look and age fits)
That's awesome. Phoenix can play anything, and he's quirky and weird.

I'm sure Phoenix will be good in that role but, Bill Hader would have made a much better Dr Strange. His Vince Price impression is spot on and he could pull off the original costume.

Heh, has Marvel given you any reason to doubt yet?

I remember when fans questioned the Robert Downey Jr. Casting. At the time he was trying to make a comeback and mostly known as a talented burnout.

Not to mention Chris Evans as Captain America and Robin Sparkles as Maria Hill. They both got some ridicule and they both turned out just fine.

The only one I think the Avengers-centric Marvel movies got really wrong was Anthony Hopkins as Odin. He tends to turn any of his established roles (Zorro, Van Helsing, the Wolfman's father) into himself, rather than to really faithfully inhabit the roles. Johnny Depp does the same thing, which is why they are (so far, at least) staying away from him for Marvel movies.

Otherwise, I have yet to see them commit a real casting faceplant.

Marvel fans LOVED RDJ as Iron Man. From day one.

It was a perfect marriage.

The controversial castings were Ruffalo following Norton, Johansson as Black Widow, and Evans as Cap.

Honestly I thought he added credibility to Thor1 and did a good job in the role...

I'm talking about when Downey was originally cast. Before the movie was made. Around 2007ish.....there was definately some doubt when he was first cast.

He wasn't some huge star. He was trying to make his way back after nearly a decade of being a burnout. He had just made Kiss, kiss bang bang, which was a great flick, but it wasn't a hit.

Regardless, I trust marvel until they give me a reason not to. So far they have not.

Leto should be the choice if they want to really take it to another level.

My only problem with Joaquin Phoenix (and to a lesser extent Jared Leto) is that I'd be afraid they'd get bored and not want to do the sequels/Avengers.

All their movies will be in the same contract. They're not going to get themselves into another situation like they did with RDJ, either with him getting the insane deal that gives him a good chunk of everything Iron Man related, or his contract running out before the planned movies are all set.

In theory, but I don't imagine it would make for great movies to have a star phoning it in under the threat of a breach of contract suit.

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange has had a lot of names rumored to be in contention for the titular role. In fact, it ranks up there with most rumored names for any comic hero in recent memory. We've seen everyone from Jon Hamm to Jack Huston suggested for the role, with Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and even Daniel Radcliffe being whispered in lower tones as contenders in between. Out of all the names rumored in contention for the role, though, it looks like it all comes down to the most interesting name mentioned in the pack: Joaquin Phoenix.

At least that's what Collider is running with, as they are claiming exclusive knowledge that after almost a month of radio silence, Phoenix is in "final negotiations" to play the gifted neurosurgeon turned practitioner of the magical arts known as Doctor Strange. According to sources, the reasoning for the delay in the negotiations is that, naturally, Joaquin Phoenix isn't going to want to be bound by a Marvel contract that prevents his work on smaller films akin to Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming Inherent Vice. This isn't that weird, considering that his rumored involvement with not only Doctor Strange but also Batman v. : Dawn Of Justice have been two of the most surprising developments in the superhero game as of late. Of course, if the former experience turns out to be more like the latter, the most recently-rumored Jack Huston might just have a shot after all.

With nearly two complete phases of films almost under their belt, Marvel Studios looks to be kicking things into high gear with their Phase Three development, and with that exciting prospect comes a lot of uncharted territory. While we will be seeing sequels like Captain America 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the studio is also starting some new franchises with newer kids on the block like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and others. With this new territory is going to come some new actors, and those new actors are going to be carrying a brand that big names like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have brought to prominence. Landing Joaquin Phoenix for Doctor Strange would not only be a great piece of fascinating casting, it would be a credit towards ensuring the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Of course, we all know how quickly "final negotiations" can turn into nothing when it comes to Marvel Studios.Remember, it was once reported that Adam McKay was in such stages of negotiations to direct Ant-Man, only to see it turn to dust. For now, Joaquin Phoenix is the front runner, and it's up to Marvel Studios to either confirm or deny this news in short order. Of course with the Marvel Cinematic Universe ruling the comic movie world at this point, they could confirm at any damned time they wanted to and we'd still be waiting with baited breath.

In the meantime, you'll be able to see Joaquin Phoenix play a different type of Doc in P.T. Anderson's Inherent Vice, which is scheduled to drop on December 12, 2014.
