Gun Control

We have all heard about what happened in Aurora, Co, and I think that Gun Control is going to be a huge topic in the following months.

What measures need to be taken? Do you have any ideas that will help prevent this kind of thing from happening again as it pertains to guns?

Yep, which is the norm for those things. I have never ever seen anyone empty 100 rounds out of one, without it jamming.

It occurs to me that I've been kind of a prick about the gun control since Friday's shoot-'em-up. I'm actually not for the revocation of the Second Amendment, or for taking guns away from anybody. I'd like to see some consistent standards, and only a few more common-sense restrictions along the lines of waiting periods and a national do-not-sell list, but mostly I'd like those damn 100-round drums and extended banana clips to go away. I think they do more harm than good, allowing psychos like this one to wound or kill 70 people in 90 seconds.

My other complaint is the ridiculousness of both sides in how they argue their points. It's pretty sad; there are enough logical fallacies and pitfalls there to make your head spin, and I don't trust the main organizers of either side. We've got to try something, because I'm tired of this kind of news.
I have been trying to make this point as well. But no one, or very few people are even interested in actually engaging in conversation. I have been trying to on this subject but it just doesn't work. If you say anything, anything at all, even something so reasonable as to require background checks for all sales at gun shows, you will be met with personal attacks and be considered an "anti-gun nut" who wants nothing more than to get rid of all guns. For so many people it is too black and white.

Really? I hadnít read he used a drum mag. I know witnesses say he paused several times but I was assuming the pauses were to reload.

I didn't either, but was going off of Hacks post. My point still stands on the 100 round drums, they are a POS.

Yeah they are...And what I heard on the news today was that it was a "cheap after market".....the weight of the drum causes it to try and drop out of the mag well....causing the jam....

It's already been pointed out that background checks are required at all gun shows in every situation except individual to individual sales. Which rarely happens. On top of that, links were provided in this thread that shows less than 1% of all weapons used in violent crimes came from a gun show. This information was provided without calling you a anti-gun nut....

It gets super-emotional. The only other subject I can think of that flips as many switches as quickly as gun control is abortion.

For example, KCFish just mentioned that 1% of all guns used in violent crimes were purchased at gun shows - but a few of those 1% were used in Columbine. Once people hear that, it gets on the news and suddenly gun show loopholes are the big thing.

It's just a mess.

I know that the background checks thing only applies to the individual to individual sale. And I know those links were there and I saw them. My point with those was that, although it was a small percentage which were from a gun show, the 1% was still 180. Which, IMO, is plenty enough to suggest doing something as simple as having background checks at all the sales within the gun show. I kind thought we agreed to disagree on that one.

There are no gun show loopholes. There is no such thing. That's a term created by anti-gun lobbies. Every applicable law outside of gun shows is exactly the same in a gun show. A gun show does not allow for any activity at all that isn't legal in the general public. You can't buy anything at a gun show that you can't legally buy on the street outside your house.

Read this if you don't understand: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/201...show-loophole/

Would you guys say the majority of gun owners are against required safety/training courses? Or is it the exact opposite in the the majority is for it?

Also, in the case of what happened in Colorado where the guy purchased 4 guns in a few weeks, I would imagine that is not common due to money and other factors, but do people think that maybe there is room to require more waiting for new gun owners? Maybe you purchase one, then wait a few weeks or whatever it is, then you can get another one? I certainly don't think established owners with permits need to be met with waiting, but for new owners, IMO anyways it seems like a reasonable action to take.

There sure are alot of posts in this thread dealing with an issue that isn't really an issue. Democrats learned a long time ago that gun control was another way of saying "please shove a red hot poker up my bum in all former Confederate states and all states west of the Mississippi."

Serious gun control isn't going to be an election topic, and it's not something Democrats will immolate themselves over post-election either. They've learned...
