Gun Control

We have all heard about what happened in Aurora, Co, and I think that Gun Control is going to be a huge topic in the following months.

What measures need to be taken? Do you have any ideas that will help prevent this kind of thing from happening again as it pertains to guns?

I don't believe there is much he can do via EO. Bloomberg mentioned today that he could direct the Feds to start enforcing the current laws better.

First, sign an executive order instructing federal agencies to better enforce existing gun laws. "There’s something like 77,000 people who’ve been accused of lying when they applied for a gun permit," Bloomberg pointed out. "We’ve only prosecuted 77 of them."

That's a place to start. Is that law that made schools gun-free zones still in effect?

What law? There are schools in Texas and Utah that allow teachers and staff to carry.

There was a law passed in the early 90's but was struck down, but it was rewritten and put elsewhere as I recall. Let me try to look something up on it to be sure.

Opposing view: Eliminate 'gun-free zone' regulations

http://www.usatoday.com/story/opinio...pratt/1773473/

Hmmm, also says "During the decade of the Clinton ban on semiautomatic rifles (the so-called assault weapons) and high-capacity magazines, crime did not go down."

School 'Gun Free Zones' are Death Traps:

This covers it more.

I don't think gun control can pass in this Congress.

I do think that the President and Democrats can leverage the public mood into fighting for the CDC to start, once again, performing comprehensive research on gun-related violence.

CDC used to do it for years, but then the NRA became so powerful it could coerce Congress into discontinuing those reports.

Hopefully CDC can re-start the arduous process of giving us the most informed statistics possible, so that appropriate action can restart in the future.

Michigan legislature just passed a law that allows people to carry guns in schools... the day before the Newtown massacre. Great timing.

The major fact that most of the gun pushers fail to realize when they say that if victims in these mass shootings were armed, they could have defended themselves is that the mass shooters in Colorado and in Newtown were fortified with body armor.

Unless you are well trained to shoot around body armor (which most average citizens are not), or can possess high powered weapons to pierce body armor (a scary thought to have these in the hands of people in schools, movie theaters, etc.)... the simple idea of arming average citizens to take down mass shooters is flawed logic.

CDC is one of the most corrupt organizations in the world. It surprises me not that you embrace them in order to further your agenda because addressing the facts will simply come up short.

Levy a tax on guns and ammo in someway with all of the proceeds going to lifetime mental institutions.

Done.

The CDC has already done the study. They did it back in 2002. This was already listed earlier but since you didn't see I'll list it for you again. The overall finding was that there was insufficient evidence that either gun control laws, or things like CCWs have any measurable effect on crime. Given the history of those policies, if there was a significant effect we should have already seen it by now. The fact that the CDC would be expected to have an anti-gun bias and yet they still reported that there is insufficient evidence to say that any of the exist laws work only enhances the credibility of the conclusion.

The report in question....

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/rr5214a2.htm

When you combine it with the fact that people are proposing that we institute national gun control policies similar to what was already in effect in CT and yet still failed to prevent the tragedy. The conclusion that we should be drawing is, instead of pumping money into failed policies, how about we try something different?
