If the robots are getting cheap enough to replace FoxConn workers, then industrial jobs are done in 20 years, IMO.
Like the author said, think about the difference in agricultural employment as a comparison.

Someone's got to develop the tubbagoo personal hovercraft we'll all require in a generation or so.

It's the way of the future. Unemployment will continue to go up as technology progresses. Finding solutions on how to deal with it needs to start now. It won't happen though.

We need to pass laws that those replaced by robots, shall own the robots and therefore charge an hourly rate for use of said robots. Problem solved.

things like this will cost millions their jobs down the road. But that doesn't matter, because the 1% will get richer and that is ALL that matters.
You, me, every working class slave does not matter at all. Our votes don't count, our dignity doesn't matter. Jobs with dignity a decent pay will be a thing of the past. Will this country be able to survive another depression? doubt it, well except for the prepared and the rich.

But your question is correct. Here, there's nothing to move to beyond the buggywhips. Invent the Ipad 5, or it's holographic projection counterpart, or whatever, and there will be a new robot to make it. It's not just the product that evolves, it's the artificial labor force.

Welcome, Eric Fisher & Friends
|
Increasing technology doesn't eliminate jobs, it just moves them around and makes the standard of living higher.
When factories first came into vogue in the early 1800s, factory workers undoubtedly eliminated the jobs of tens of thousands of independent craftsmen. But as a result, the cost of goods declined radically. The technology then made other jobs available. Someone had to create the industrial equipment, and since that required fewer workers it also freed up labor and resources to create jobs that we previously didn't have the capacity or economics to do. The masses most likely didn't have massage therapists and cigar makers and birthday clowns before the industrial revolution. The same happens with this stuff. The robots eliminate jobs manufacturing electric shavers, but they create (fewer) jobs manufacturing robots. And with the additional labor and cheaper costs of shavers, people then have the disposable income to afford new services that they couldn't before. So with the advent of shaver robots we'll eventually be able to afford personal chefs and jet backpacks, which creates chef jobs and backpack sales jobs.
