Steve Breaston: Chiefs took 'step back' vs. Seahawks

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap100...ck-vs-seahawks

Quote:
By Brian McIntyre
Around the League writer

In the third game of the preseason, NFL teams hope to find out as much as possible about their teams so they can rest starters and sort out a few remaining position battles in the final preseason game prior to roster cuts.

During their third preseason game, a 44-14 thumping at the hands of the visiting Seattle Seahawks, the Kansas City Chiefs settled their backup quarterback situation, but little else on Friday night

Less than two years removed from an AFC West title, the Chiefs are viewed by many analysts and outlets as a team that could surprise this season. They had a 7-9 finish in 2011 despite losing Cassel, Jamaal Charles, Tony Moeaki and Pro Bowl-caliber safety Eric Berry to season-ending injuries, each of whom is healthy entering 2012.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that head coach Romeo Crennel was not pleased with how the team's starters fared last night.

It's hard to know what displeased Crennel more. A first-team defense that allowed Seahawks rookie quarterback Russell Wilson to lead six scoring drives to start the game and did not force a single punt or turnover, or an offense that had 11 net yards of offense and punted four times to start the game, and got even worse as the night progressed.

Kansas City's offense opened the second half having Cassel fumble inside the red zone, a result of the veteran quarterback not being aware of an undrafted rookie bearing down on him. On the following series, an ill-advised Cassel throw went the other way for a touchdown. The next drive ended with a pair of Quinn incompletions, leading to a punt that was returned 92 yards for a touchdown.

"They (the Seahawks) punched us in the face and we didnā€™t respond well," wide receiver Steve Breaston said after the game. "Everybody is big on the third preseason game. It'€™s a step back as a team."
It's an article and it's about the Chiefs. That said... Berry got posterized on NFL.com last night.

Ya, but I am concerned he is not looking or anticipating blocks at this point. You need to know where guys are and avoid blocks, especially the type of blocks that will end your career.

He did avoid the block, well enough to keep from getting his knee destroyed.

i think it's harder for him to avoid blocks because Romeo has him running around like a mad man so Berry is trying to do way too much with so little. Berry is trying to use his range to satisfy some fake dumb position Crennel is trying to use for him that sometimes, or what it seems most of the time, it catches Berry off guard in freelancing. I.e. blocks, people coming at him for all angles.

It's not like he's playing traditional SS where you stand in zone or come in the box. The dude is everywhere and Romeo is going to get him killed

This.

Yes it is hard not to say the defense sucked ass. But to ignore the offense's role in this is pretty hard to do as well.

Yes the Seahawks did come in and punch us in the face as they have done to all the teams they have faced this preseason.

It's like one side of the ball sucks so the other chokes with the pressure. And then the other side sucks and the one side chokes under the pressure.

Hard to say which one was which early. We had ball first, and 4 posessions garnered 3 yards. They had 4 posessions and 16 points. Lots of suck all the way around.
