Why people laugh at Creationists

Taking a lead from Killer Clown I thought I'd create a alternative thread to post some videos I like...

[EDIT New video here]

So on with the show:

Here's the Kent Hovind Theory:

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions simply because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Sure. Christians don't have a monopoly on charitable behavior by any means. But the churches I have personally interacted with (mostly Christian) put the lion's share of their collections back out into the community. These are local small town churches though. On taxation: Never. I absolutely stand against taxation of churches. Churches need to follow the rules outlined for tax exempt status, but the government needs to stay out of church unless completely necessary.

How about they pay taxes on the property they own? Like everyone else?

Good Question.

If I wanted to start the Church of Chiefs, I don't think I would get tax-exempt approval even though my church has just as legit of purpose as another church.

I thought I had posted in this thread about taxing churches, but it was in the Chick-Fil-A thread. I disagree with giving government at any level that much influence or control over a church:

The local government that is allowed to collect property tax on the company that I work for has tried unsuccessfully to dramatically increase that tax amount. Recently the local government has tried to use seasonal inventory variations to artificially increase the property's worth. I work for a huge company though. They have teams of lawyers who are very good at fighting this type of behavior. I don't think that most churches do, and I don't trust any level of government to limit their own power or ability to collect funds.
This would be crippling to a small local church. And this type of taxation would block out unpopular faiths.

Not if they don't own property. Rent something. I rent to a couple churches and one is in to me for $20k or so one mostly pays its bills.

Churches should pay property taxes if the own property to maintain the infrastructure around them.

I do believe that the "church" building and surrounding land should be tax exempt. Also any adjoining property needed to house the "clergy" should also be exempt as long as all utilities were provided from the same line. That is water/electric fed from a common meter. Any other property that a church owns (say a downtown block rented to others) should not only be taxed, but the rental income taxed as well.

I'm so glad Jesus didn't kill Nik Wallenda. The world needs high wire walkers. The kids with cancer that Jesus will kill today probably weren't going to contribute anything productive anyway, or even be able to do circus acts.

I agree with the second part but give me the logical reason why they shouldn't help pay for paving roads and repairs we all have to pay for.

No real logical reason since we are talking about religion, which can't rely upon logic; that's why religion is a belief system.

But on the other hand, most local-based churches probably (or at least should) help the local community far more than any taxed amount. So, as long as the community has no problem, then neither do I.

That said, I don't have any issue taxing the larger "churches" where the preacher/minister lives in a million dollar home and wears $1,000 suits. Those are big businesses using the banner of religion for private gain.

I'm not sure I follow. Why would Nik Wallenda be laughing at non-believers? How exactly does that line of reasoning go?

I've never heard so many 'Sweet Jesus's and 'Praise Jesus's strung together at one time. Pretty convincing display.
