Why people laugh at Creationists

Taking a lead from Killer Clown I thought I'd create a alternative thread to post some videos I like...

[EDIT New video here]

So on with the show:

Here's the Kent Hovind Theory:

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions simply because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

I told you I am the son of a chemical phsycist and live in an envirment full of research scientists and the funny thing is even they wouldn't agree with you .
It doesn't really matter how it sounds to you. Truth isn't about what sounds good. That's a very important part of letting go of your confirmation bias.

Quote:
Confirmation bias is a filter through which you see a reality that matches your expectations. It causes you to think selectively, but the real trouble begins when confirmation bias distorts your active pursuit of facts.

Punditry is a whole industry built on confirmation bias. Rush Limbaugh and Keith Olbermann, Glenn Beck and Arianna Huffington, Rachel Maddow and Ann Coulter – these people provide fuel for beliefs, they pre-filter the world to match existing world-views. If their filter is like your filter, you love them. If it isn’t, you hate them.

Whether or not pundits are telling the truth, or vetting their opinions, or thoroughly researching their topics is all beside the point. You watch them not for information, but for confirmation.

[..]

Half-a-century of research has placed confirmation bias among the most dependable of mental stumbling blocks. Journalists looking to tell a certain story must avoid the tendency to ignore evidence to the contrary; scientists looking to prove a hypothesis must avoid designing experiments with little wiggle room for alternate outcomes. Without confirmation bias, conspiracy theories would fall apart. Did we really put a man on the moon? If you are looking for proof we didn’t, you can find it.

“If one were to attempt to identify a single problematic aspect of human reasoning that deserves attention above all others, the confirmation bias would have to be among the candidates for consideration. Many have written about this bias, and it appears to be sufficiently strong and pervasive that one is led to wonder whether the bias, by itself, might account for a significant fraction of the disputes, altercations, and misunderstandings that occur among individuals, groups, and nations.”

- Raymond S. Nickerson

[..]

You seek out safe havens for your ideology, friends and coworkers of like mind and attitude, media outlets guaranteed to play nice. Whenever your opinions or beliefs are so intertwined with your self-image you couldn’t pull them away without damaging your core concepts of self, you avoid situations which may cause harm to those beliefs.

“The human understanding when it has once adopted an opinion (either as being the received opinion or as being agreeable to itself) draws all things else to support and agree with it.”

- Francis Bacon

Over time, by never seeking the antithetical, through accumulating subscriptions to magazines, stacks of books and hours of television, you can become so confident in your world-view no one could dissuade you.

Remember, there’s always someone out there willing to sell eyeballs to advertisers by offering a guaranteed audience of people looking for validation. Ask yourself if you are in that audience.

In science, you move closer to the truth by seeking evidence to the contrary. Perhaps the same method should inform your opinions as well.

Science doesn't want to run the world. Science just wants to understand the world. Not sure what you mean by saying bankers pit Muslims against the Christian West.

You say "Christianity as it is supposed to be practiced". But again, that's your opinion. Many Christians are fine with going to church Sunday and trying to live honest lives. You saying "as it is supposed to be practiced" is your own personal view. So if it's not compatible, then your own little version of religion obviously must do something the general public has voted illegal. That's your problem, not the laws.

Organized church is no longer separate from the state? Uhh, yes it is. Be sure you understand what that means. The same laws should apply to both state and religious communities. Religion shouldn't be allowed to discriminate. That's the very reason this country was founded. If you don't like that, you're welcome to leave this country and go somewhere that does.

It's not religion vs. Science. They're not incompatible.

Your posts are fascinating. It's been a while since a single poster has created so many posts that are nothing more than a collection of rambling unrelated nonsensical statements.

From your article:

Quote:
So, if you’re wondering what happens when humans are genetically modified, the experiment is being conducted as you read this post. Since fluoroquinolone antibiotics have been popularized, rates of autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, migraine headaches, strokes, neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease, ataxia, transient ischemic attack, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetes, hepatitis C, and primary biliary cirrhosis have risen substantially.
See the author is doing some unsupported fear mongering here. Making a factual statement and showing a correlation, and hoping the reader applies causation. The bolded sentence might actually be true. But that big list of terrible symptoms can't logically be attributed to the fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Even if the rates of all those things have increased, it could be from a whole host of other reasons. I could make the factual statement that since cell phones have been popularized, the rates of that whole list of bad shit have increased! Does that mean cell phones are responsible?

Be very skeptical of articles that present you with hundreds of "What ifs".

Quote:
In genetically modifying “them,” are we genetically modifying “us?” How could genetically modified bacteria affect the balance of the human microbiome? How could they affect the bodily systems that the microbiome controls? How could a GM bacteria adversely affect human health including personality and behavior?
If the author actually knew the answers to those questions, then it would be significant information. But the author doesn't, they're relying on you reading that and answering those questions yourself when you also don't have the answers. But it's OK for the author, because it's written for people who enjoy "out there" possibilities like that, so you'll eat it right up and surely answer "HELL YEAH IT WOULD DO THAT AWFUL STUFF" in your mind, and your opinion is swayed.

Don't fall for that lame stuff...

Eventually what ever is real is left standing. I suspect when the crapper blows and reality as machines have made it ceases to function long enough we will see who is left standing and what sort of beliefs they hold True. Satan's days are coming to a close and it will be satisfying to watch knees start to buckle. There are many many folks who dont really grasp what their worm not dying is all about. Its a very unpleasant sensation .
You're not a camera. Stop bullshitting yourself. Very few people have that intellectual capability, and they sure as hell aren't hanging out on football message boards pondering whether Jesus had a cock n' balls.

The end times have been predicted since the dawn of religion. Long before Christian religion. Countless generations fearing it have come and gone. And always, the descriptions of the end of days happens to fit whatever current calamity is affecting society at that time. Conveniently updated with each generation. Always worse than the last.

All the while, our understanding of the universe continues to expand. Slowly, what used to be attributed to God in the universe, is then understood and explained away. And your defense has been reduced to wishing for the Apocalypse to happen for validation, hoping to watch the knees buckle at the prophesized end of days that never comes.
