Why people laugh at Creationists

Taking a lead from Killer Clown I thought I'd create a alternative thread to post some videos I like...

[EDIT New video here]

So on with the show:

Here's the Kent Hovind Theory:

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions simply because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it."

Ummm what?

In terms of technology the Muslims were way ahead of us until much later than you seem to think.

The west has done nothing BUT gain on Islam since the turn of the first millennium. Religion didn't destroy technology and advancement in the west... the fall of Rome did. The west stayed pretty much stagnant throughout the dark ages as parasites on what Rome built, while Muslims were changing the way the world was viewed by all cultures. Once they started choking science off with theocracy, the west steadily gained and then surpassed them. We won't agree though, because I simply don't think the RCC has hindered science as much as you do.

Religion get its morality from us. We have disciplined all but one. Once we remove the claws from Islam we can rest and let them argue among themselves as to who's magic is the most powerful~

That was a decent read, albeit obviously slanted.

I do have to say that the people at Answers in Genesis and the Discovery Institute sound like a bunch of holier than thou, know it all douchebags that got their feelings hurt with those replies.

“From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it’s different. Consider again that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every ‘superstar,’ every ‘supreme leader,’ every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there—on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.”

The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity – in all this vastness – there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.

The Earth is the only world known, so far, to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment, the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.

Just as an aside, 35 years of devotion is no small achievement, so even though it has nothing to do with the thread, congratulations on that.

Creationist Darek Isaacs said during an online broadcast posted Monday that evolutionary theory excused rape.

He said during an episode of “Creation Today” that he had studied works by Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, E.O. Wilson, and other “purveyors of evolutionary thought” and found himself in “a very, very dark place,” reported the Friendly Atheist blog.

“You have to start asking questions: Well, if evolution is true, and it’s just all about the male propagating their DNA, we had to ask hard questions, like, well, is rape wrong?” Isaacs said, as one of his hosts gasps.

Isaacs is the author of “Dragons or Dinosaurs?” – which argues that ancient myths about dragons were based on human interactions with dinosaurs — and the founder of the Watchman 33 end times blog.

He said marriage would be “anathema” in an evolutionary worldview because it would limit sexual relations to one man and one woman for life.

“According to the evolutionary worldview, [if] that male is strong enough and he had wonderful genes, he should propagate his DNA as much as possible so that the species can progress,” Isaacs said. “So it redefines everything about our society.”

Nope nope nope, false. Rape is about violence and domination; polygamy and open societies would satisfy this clown's requirements just fine.

Loser, move on.

Eh. What resources it had were undone by its geographic vulnerability; being at the crossroads of every trade route ever and consisting mostly of flat terrain means that it's always been a series of conquests and re-conquests.

Also, I should point out that, although radical atheists don't like to hear this part, religion did not crush western civilization in the Middle Ages. On the contrary, in fact; most of the education, social structure, and cultural advancement of the time was due in whole or in part to the presence of institutionalized religion.

Totally valid point. However let's not act like the Middle East has always been like it is now. The Ottomans/ turks, in all of their variations, were successful for a very long time in maintaining their empire. In the end though they still got their asses whipped and conquered by the Mongols as well as Timur the lame, so I think in the end you're right.

You won't get any argument from me, even though I am an atheist. This is actually a strong point of contention between myself and most atheists. It was also pivotal at uniting people in wars of conquest in both the Catholic and Muslim camps, good or bad.

Except in regards to infrastructure. Most of what they had in the middle ages was built by Rome long before and simply maintained.

People seem to think that the middle ages were the peak of religious fanaticism... but that's not the case at all. It peaked after that, and it was certainly not all positive.

I would agree that throughout the middle ages religion was, for the MOST part, pretty benign and in many ways beneficial. There was some ****ed up shit, like Muslims essentially banning discovery and math.
