Chiefs signed S Quintin Demps, formerly of the Texans.
Demps, 28 next month, recorded 35 tackles and five pass breakups in 12 games with the Texans last season as a backup. He has never started a game in his five-year career since being a fourth-round pick of the Eagles. Demps will compete for a roster spot behind safeties Eric Berry and Kendrick Lewis.

We don't really have a good SS backup and Demps is capable of playing it.

Decent little depth addition, if only to compete for a backup job. He also looks to be a solid special teams player.

I've noticed that a lot of the guys the Chiefs have brought in have extremely strong STs backgrounds. I wonder how much influence Toub is having on that. We sure seem to be trying to load him up.

Most backups aren't very good. At that point you're talking about degrees of not very good and their ability to contribute on STs.

Is he relatively durable? Is he versatile? Can he play STs?

For Demps, all these things are pluses. No, he's not a guy that should be starting for an NFL team.

And according to PFF, he's the #58 safety in the league last year and ranked ahead of several starters. I don't worship at the altar of PFF, but it's a handy tool and it seems to suggest he's not as awful as you think. #58 puts him right at the fringe starter/primary backup level and to get him off the scrap heap seems like a nice addition.
