Protesters storm U.S. Embassy in Cairo

http://www.cnn.com/2012/09/11/world/...html?hpt=hp_t1

I suppose it's a good thing that "it doesn't have to be a good thing for us"....

Cairo (CNN) -- Angry protesters climbed the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo on Tuesday and hauled down the American flag, replacing it with a black standard with Islamic emblems, apparently in protest of the production of a film thought to insult the Prophet Mohammed.

The incident prompted a volley of warning shots to be fired as a large crowd gathered outside, said CNN producer Mohammed Fahmy, who was on the scene.

The replacement flag read, "There is no God but Allah and Mohammad is his messenger."

Others expressed more general grievances about U.S. policy, chanting anti-American slogans and holding up bits of a shredded American flag to television camera crews in front of the embassy.

An embassy operator told CNN that the facility had been cleared of diplomatic personnel earlier Tuesday, ahead of the apparent threat, while Egyptian riot police were called to help secure the area.

The U.S. Embassy said in a statement Tuesday that it "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions."

"Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy," the statement said. "We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

The incident occurred on the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania, as crowds gathered in somber remembrance of the nearly 3,000 people killed that day.

It is not clear which film upset the protesters in Cairo.

In 2008, an anti-Muslim and anti-immigration parliamentarian from The Netherlands sparked international outcry when he produced a film that portrayed Islam as a violent religion.

Geert Wilders' film "Fitna," which he released online, featured images of terrorist acts superimposed over verses from the Quran.

Firing rubber bullets into the crowd now. Cops are also throwing rocks at the protesters. That's a new one...

It's wasn't a choice it was my duty. I felt, I owed it to him. I should be thanked for stopping him. You know the way you scold a small child so he doesn't try to drink the toilet water when you're not looking.

I'm expecting a thank you email from Aries shortly.

Wow. Unbelievable.

General asks preacher not to back anti-Muslim film

WASHINGTON (AP) — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff asked a Florida preacher Wednesday to withdraw his support of the anti-Muslim film blamed for fueling the fatal attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Gen. Martin Dempsey called Terry Jones, who is known for inflammatory anti-Islamic rhetoric, to express his concerns about the film, saying it could spike tensions and trigger violence.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed in the attack.

Dempsey spokesman Marine Col. Dave Lapan said Jones did not say whether he would limit or continue his backing of the movie, "Innocence of Muslims." A video excerpt of the low-budget film, which portrays Islamic Prophet Muhammad as a feckless philanderer who approved of child sexual abuse, is available on YouTube.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Jones said he would consider the request, and that he would have to watch the film first.

Stephanie Sapp, a spokeswoman for Jones, said the group was supposed to show an excerpt of the film on Tuesday night, but Internet difficulties made that impossible.

Jones also said he spoke with the movie's director on the phone Wednesday afternoon. He said he has not met the filmmaker in person, but the man contacted him a few weeks ago about promoting the movie.

The filmmaker identified himself in a telephone interview with the AP as Sam Bacile, but there are ongoing questions about his real identity.

A man identified as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, told the AP in an interview outside Los Angeles that he was manager for the company that produced the film. He provided the first details about a shadowy production group behind the movie.

Nakoula, who said he was a Coptic Christian, denied he directed the film and said he knew Bacile. But the cellphone number that AP contacted Tuesday to reach the filmmaker who identified himself as Bacile traced to the same address near Los Angeles where AP found Nakoula. Federal court papers said Nakoula's aliases included Nicola Bacily, Erwin Salameh and others.

Jones said Bacile is not the filmmaker's real name and that he is in hiding.

Jones runs a small church called Dove Outreach World Center in Gainesville, Fla. He gained notoriety in 2010 when his call to burn Qurans caused Pentagon worries that it could endanger the lives of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. He called off the burning, but his discussions triggered unrest in Afghanistan.

A quick look at a map means that, even if we could somehow avoid massive civil unrest, protests, and economic collapse, and defeat all of those nations' albeit-less-advanced militaries, we would have to physically occupy a land area many times the size of the US and with many, many times the amount of people in order to convince them to stop fighting.

Not happening.
Of course it's not going to happen and we certainly couldn't take them all on with the kid glove rules of engagement we've been using in an effort to win hearts and minds in the GWoT, but if it was total war, I don't think any of those obstacles would slow us down much. For example, Pakistan has nukes, but our nukes out-range them by half a world.

You'd think these people would have something better to do than burn shit because someone 3000 miles away made a film on the internet none of them have ever seen, like I don't know....build sewage systems, water treatment...pick up some of the garbage in their streets or work.

You're very bright, which is why it disturbs me when you display such ignorance. In one sentence you've just proved that you don't understand, at a very fundamental level, how we turned the corner in Iraq, how potentially impossible a situation Afghanistan is, why the Russians could never win in Afghanistan and why we could never win in Vietnam.

Even our most senior military believes that you can't win wars like this just by shooting the bad guys. That's where you and others with your mindset go wrong. The Russians killed over a million people in Afghanistan while they were there and didn't have any fancy rules of engagement, and yet they got tossed out on their ass.

Counter-insurgency isn't some silly Democratic slogan to be nice to bad guys.
