Romney: 47% of Americans are victims

I guess this maybe the kill shot for his campaign. I know some of you believe you this and won't find a problem with what he said but as a person running for POTUS you probably shouldn't write off 1/2 the country especially in a disparaging way.

Quote:
A hidden camera video of Mitt Romney at a fundraiser shows him talking disparagingly of people who will vote for President Obama.

Said Romney: "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what...These are people who pay no income tax."

He adds: "My job is is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."

I feel like I've accomplished something by opening your eyes to the truth.

The real test of whether you're hooked or not is how you'd react if it were phased out as a part of tax reform designed to benefit the country. If you'd applaud because you're putting the country ahead of your personal pain, I'd say you aren't really hooked. If you'd squeal like most of the rest of the people who only care about their own pocketbooks, then yeah, you probably need an intervention just like at least 47% of your fellow countrymen.

You are implying that people will go into fits if things like the mortgage interest deduction or student loan programs, basically saying those groups of people are "hooked" on government assistance. I then made the logic leap that you don't like those two things, given the nasty way in which you phrased it.
I'm not sure that's a logical leap, but I am sure it's off topic. Do you agree that there would be a big outcry if either of those benefits were discontinued and, if you do, do you agree that that's strong evidence that many people are hooked on those benefits?

You probably think your post bothers me. It doesn't. It helps to make my case. So, thank you.

It's possible that I will view the deductions as a good public policy deserving of preservation, but for now, I will just declare them the bastions of typical American looterism. After all, I don't take any deductions. I'm a very productive American.

What happened to Kotter? Did he go bankrupt and stuck on welfare over the last year? Dude used to be rational but now he's a mommy's basement HQ away from being an Occupy protester.

You are equating addiction with a couple of government benefits that are good for our country. I personally would have had a lot of trouble paying for college without a federal student loan program. I took out loans and paid them back years ahead of schedule. The mortgage interest deduction encourages people to buy homes and that's also a good thing.

To answer you question directly, yes there would be a huge outcry if those two benefits were discontinued, and rightfully so. People are "hooked" on those benefits the same way that people are "hooked" on food and shelter.

Romney conflates those two 47% factoids into some kind of belief that they are composed of the exact same people.

Considering that more that about 40% of potentially eligible voters will not vote.

Considering that polls indicate Obama gets more of the college educated vote than Romney.

Considering that polls Romney gets more of the over 65 y/o vote than Obama.

Considering that many over 65 y/o do not pay taxes because of their social security and reitrement benefits do not cross the pay some tax threshhold.

Considering that many over 65 y/o do expect government to provide Medicare benefits.

How could Romney think that those two 47% are the same people when college educated voters prefer Obama, over 65 y/o voters prefer Romney and 40% of people do not vote?

Romney would be a better candidate if he had better reasoning ability. He does not seem very smart.

I think it is a shame that some posts in this thread say that Romney spoke the truth.
Yep.

OK, reasonable people can differ on whether those programs are good for the country, but I appreciate your answer. My answer to your question is that I think student loans have damaged our college system by driving up tuition costs. I'd like to see them eliminated, but I don't think it would be fair to the current crop of students to cut them to zero in one fell swoop and leave them to pay the inflated tuition costs on their own. I'm not sure what the solution is, but I disagree with your view that the student loan program has been good for the country. (Both my wife and I used student loans and we take the home mortgage interest deduction, btw).
