To be fair to Romney, he has to thread a very small needle. Its not quite as tough as landing a plane on the Hudson river, but he's got a damned hard task ahead of him.

He's losing by about 3-4 points, a lot worse in the electoral college, he is the first candidate in the last 7 elections with a net unfavorable rating, going up against a president with a decent favorable rating. (not to be confused with job approval)

If Romney's too nice out there he'll smile his way back to private life, but he obviously can't feed into the C. Montgomery Burns image he's got with the public.

I think you're misunderstanding the point. He's not saying that we need to start training more teachers - he's saying that we can increase funding for education so that the student:teacher ratio is lowered - putting the out-of-work teachers you're talking about to work.
