Syria: Iran's Path To The Sea

Can somebody explain this to me, please?

Quote:
MR. ROMNEY: Well, let's step back and talk about what's happening in Syria and how important it is. First of all, 30,000 people being killed by their government is a humanitarian disaster.

Secondly, Syria's an opportunity for us because Syria plays an important role in the Middle East, particularly right now. Syria is Iran's only ally in the Arab world. It's their route to the sea. It's the route for them to arm Hezbollah in Lebanon, which threatens, of course, our ally Israel. And so seeing Syria remove Assad is a very high priority for us. Number two, seeing a -- a replacement government being responsible people is critical for us. And finally, we don't want to have military involvement there. We don't want to get drawn into a military conflict.

My understanding is that it's a combination of that (which is lower than our ~5.3% average over the past 45 or so years and it might even be lower than our current spending level) and counting the costs of our wars on-budget instead of off.

Edit: Persian Gulf, duh.

Why don't we analyze our military spending in relation to actual risks and threats, and potential (but not implausible) risks and threats, and then allocate the money. Republicans too often have one simple mantra when it comes to military spending: "more is better".

The American Navy is unquestionably far and away the most powerful navy in the world. That doesn't even factor in America's ability to destroy enemy shipping by use of air power using our BY FAR largest in the world chain of military bases, including bases located very close to the home countries of our potential/likely enemies.

Let's face it, the modern navy is more about power projection than anything else. It's not really about making sure that enemy subs don't sink our shipping in the middle of the Atlantic or Pacific. Power projection isn't just aircraft carriers. It's about drones and air force and having the capability to bring multiple force types to bear in a very short timeframe to nearly every square foot of land in the world. The Navy is only a part of that capability.
This is a massive swing and miss (as Direckshun might say).

1. The reference to our ship count at the end of the cold war was a refutation of the simplistic argument that we naturally have fewer ships now than in 1916 because ships are more capable now. If there was any validity to that argument, it should have been true in 1989 as well. The reference has nothing to do with how many ships we need in 2012 and beyond.

2. We should absolutely base our future ship requirements on actual threats. That's why I've pointed out that the last time the Navy assessed their needs they came up with a number in excess of 300.

3. Thank goodness we have the most powerful navy in the world. It would be nice if you and your democrat friends would stop trying to gut it.

So it is a two trillion dollar increase in defense spending, or not?

I do agree with putting wars on-budget. Since they seem perpetual rather than isolated and unique...

1916 or whatever year Romney used was his reference, right? Not ours.

In 1989 we were coming off a worldwide military arms-race with a superpower who was trying to match us in every type of military firepower you could name, right? Is that happening in 2012? If so I missed it. China's deep water navy is a joke at the moment.

WHAT exactly are worried about here?

And I pointed out that you're a fool if you think they didn't bake in a cushion. "We need 310 so we can get 280" is standard military thinking, and probably has been since George freaking Washington.

Don't want to gut it. The joke is that Republicans think that any cut to anything anywhere is "gutting" a program that spends HALF of the total worldwide military spending in the world. What Social Security and other welfare programs are to the left, the military is to the right. Between the two sides, EVERYTHING becomes an untouchable ultra-high priority and trimming a dime off of it would unquestionably result in absolute CATASTROPHE.

Such thinking is why our national budget is completely ****ed, with no signs of ever getting fixed. Greece here we come, apparently.

There were fails from both sides last night but with a presidential election at hand and an additional 80 – 85 minutes of substantial material to discuss, consider, and decipher, this minutia ("It's their route to the sea. It's the route for them...") is what you chose to run with?

I don't think anybody on this forum is going to accuse me of skirting the important issues when it comes to this election.

I also don't think anybody's going to accuse me of missing an opportunity to have a little fun when I can.

Thanks for explaining that Iran actually doesnt fund Shia vs Sunni attacks in Syria and that Iran doesn't fund Hamas and Hezbollah.

Thanks for showing us a map that PROVES Iran can't possibly be involved with providing arms and aid to Syria in an attempt to destabilize the region.

Thanks for proving that these same arms won't be uses to fulfill the Hamas mandates...

What would we do without you...?

This is the problem with Obama's argument...

Naval ships are not outdated, they are super advanced and project power throughout the world. It is an insult to every Sailor on these ships to compare them with outdated equipment. Missile frigates, destroyers, etc...are serve important roles and with us being in a state of turmoil we need fleets for defense and fleets to have at a moments notice throughout the world.

All it takes is a little reading to go back and see that for the last ~600 years whoever has the greatest Navy , also has the greatest prosperity.

Looks like he was employing a figure of speech. If I said that, politically, Syria "had Iran's back" I would not be implying that they bordered each other and that Syria could help defend Iran's land. I think anyone capable of independent thought would understand my meaning. Perhaps Romney just underestimated how petty some Democrats can be with the proper brainwashing.
