Romney, give FEMA back to the states. Is this your opinion?

I was surprised when I saw the clip on the news tonight that in the debates this summer that Romney said we should get rid of FEMA and give the money to the states.

Of all the things that the federal government is cable of doing, it would seem that disaster response would be agreed to by all political parties. It issues guarantees so the states can immediately borrow money to help its citizens. Declares national emergencies to speed up help.

Only the federal government can order in the national guard, help to deliver water, blankets, provide temp shelter, rescue citizens etc. etc,

I dont understand, help me out. How could any state be prepared on its own for a Katrina or Sandy type storm? This seems like a bad idea.

Is the national guard part of FEMA?

How do you figure that only the federal government can deliver blankets and water, btw?

I said better, more efficently and quickly than a local government could.

Anything Mitt said prior to yesterday on any topic is probably not his position today.

Problem with the poll - are we assuming someone competent is in charge, or people like W and Brownie?

That's not a nice nickname for obama. I think you can get in trouble for that.

I meant there is insufficient data to evaluate the plan you say Romney has. We can't decide on something without seeing the details first.
What do you think this is, national healthcare?

I didn't think that one through quite enough. Forgot who might be commenting on it.

Actually Obama and the Bush's went non-partisan. Obama decided to appoint someone who knew how to deal with disasters, not a political appointee.

Actual cool story that I didn't know.

Obama called Jeb Bush. Jeb's buddy (William Fugate) http://www.fema.gov/leadership/william-craig-fugate has successfully managed 4 hurricane responses in Florida. He wanted Bill to take over FEMA. He wanted to set a precedent that the FEMA job was apolitical. That it was based on experience, not politics for the good of the country.

That option washed away into the Atlantic sometime earlier this evening.

I have no idea what his plan is other than eliminate it and give the money to the states. Just a video clip from the debates.

I never thought anyone would consider it a good idea to each state to be on its own for disaster recovery. Seems like a bad idea to me.
