The "I Voted" thread

Election day is 12 minutes away on the East Coast. This is the thread to post in once you've voted. For those of you who do vote - congratulations. You now have earned the right to complain about everything for the next four years.

Personally, I Early-Voted last Friday night. Early voting was supposed to end on Wednesday (I think), but because the storm closed it down for two days, the Gov extended it until Friday night. I drove my Dad (age: 79) out to a local community college, and we both went in to stand in the pretty impressively long line.

Dad has trouble standing, so he sat in a chair they had set out; someone apparently came and ushered right up front. I didn't see this, of course, because I was at the tail end of the line; it ended up taking me about an hour fifteen to move through. The election volunteers couldn't have been more efficient. Voting itself took about five minutes.

So go out and vote. Those of you in swing states may end up standing there for hours and hours, but it's important, and worth it. You could very well end up being the deciding vote. Then come in here and post about it.

Uh, yeah, it is a problem. The old people that work at the polling places have a hard enough time locating a name and address as it is.

Before voter ID, there were no lines.

After voter ID, long lines.

I voted Oct. 29 since I work election day and couldn't vote with my family today. This is my daughter's first election since she turned 18 in September.

I voted this morning and since Romney is going to win KS I used my vote as a 3rd party protest vote.

The line was one of the longest I can remember and it was due to a 124 year old lady running the check in desk. There were 6 machines but only 2 were being used at any given time. It wasn't all her fault though. Several people were at the wrong place. One of the other ladies would ask if they received the mailer that tells them were to go and there was a consistent "I don't have time to read those" answer.

I persevered and made my voice heard.

Machine? WTF is a machine? Bob Dole REALLY wanted to violate the no cell phone rule and take a photo of our polling place.

3 clones of your 124 year old check in clerk, and 6 voting "stations", which are folding tables (with a white tablecloth) pushed up against a wall, with cardboard barriers between each tabletop area. Of course, that really doesn't offer any privacy at all, since the line to check in snakes around and there are people less than 2 feet behind you.

Still only took 20 minutes, and is always a chance to catch up on gossip with the neighbors.

We actually had one touchscreen machine in Itasca, IL that I used. I arrived right at 6 am and there were about 30 people in line. It was going fine then one of the old ladies tried to have people form different lines but her instructions were clear as mud and there ended up being a small mess waiting to give my name and get all that going. All in all though, it could be worse, I could be in Florida or Ohio in the rollercoaster lines waiting to vote.

Wow on some of these stories. We had about six middle aged women running our polling station. There were about 30-40 places to sit down and fill out your ballot. I was about 6th or 7th in line when I went in, and I was probably out of there in five minutes. I walked up, gave them my voter registration card, they typed in my number, I signed the iPad thingy, and they gave me a ballot. I guess it might take a few seconds longer if they have to look you up by name instead of voter id number. I sat down, filled in the proper arrows, put my ballot in the machine, and took a sticker. Machine told me I was #235.
