An exercise to test your open-mindedness.

Well, kind of. But it's interesting. Do their little quiz, report whether you solved the puzzle or not, and then read the article. It's kind of cool.

Took me about 3 number sequences to guess it right and another 4 or 5 to confirm before I answered. I was correct.

Tests were correct...answer was wrong. And i was informed that even a 5 year old would have gotten it right.

I had a hypothesis early on and was able to confirm it through numerous examples of correct and incorrect sequences. I attempted to tease out the domain the best I could and answered: Integers, strictly increasing. Fortunately, the test appeared to understand my answer. Ultimately, I had 7 yes sequences and 4 no sequences, including responses with negative numbers, zero, and repeated values.

I guess I don't understand the issue here. In mathematics, one is actively looking for counter examples to their hypotheses/work. If you're not finding a no or two, you're probably not probing the domain at the appropriate grain size.

Yep. I tested until I had 8 yes and 5 no. Tested repeat values, zeros, odd/even combinations... I didn't think to use negative numbers.

The issue is that most people don't think like this. They test for YES only.

Then most people aren't going to generalize with any accuracy. They will find "a" rule, but most likely not "the" rule.

I suppose that is the point and why there are so many loud idiots in this forum.

That's what I thought was really interesting about this. There's a tendency to come up with a theory and then test solely to support that theory instead of conceiving and testing for cases where the theory is wrong. I thought it was a pretty simple and elegant way to illustrate the point.

Perhaps mathematical degrees should be necessary and sufficient for political discourse.

Yes, I got it correct, but I don't know if I would have gotten it right or not if I had taken the test naturally with no preconceived notions of what it might be about.

When you noted that this was sort of a test on open-mindedness, it led me to be skeptical of what my first choice was, and may have made me more rigorously test it. I may have gotten it anyway though because the test also cautioned you to be sure you were right and you only had one chance.

This test proves little—like many online and even some psychology tests.
