2013 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

Proposed 2013 Slogan: Tigers: They're what's for dinner
Actual 2013 Slogan: Come to Play
A better, more accurate, or alternative slogan: All in, no panic, we promise.

Dayton Moore has pushed all his chips in and is riding on King/Jack suited, hoping it comes together, he gets some good luck, and he hits the nuts by the river card. There's potential, oh yes, there's potential. There's also risk.

At the midway point, Dayton is left counting on the river card. The flop and turn didn't help him, and he's looking at the Tigers holding a pair of Queens and the Indians holding a pair of 9s. His 2013 plan hasn't failed - yet - but the odds are not in his favor.

Burning questions updates below.

Burning Questions for 2013:

1) Will the improve rotation be improved enough? Does James Shields pitch like a fringe No. 1 away from Tampa Bay? Does Ervin Santana pitch to his highest upside in his walk year? Can Jeremy Guthrie build on his strong performance as a Royal in 2012? Can Wade Davis bring his new mentality- and velocity - back to the rotation?

Midseason check-in: Yes, the rotation is certainly improved enough. Shields has pitched like a fringe No. 1 and Santana is having his best season. Guthrie has horrible peripherals but has continued to perform well at his home park and eat innings on the road. Davis brought neither his kick-ass mentality or improved velocity back to the rotation and is in Luke Hochevar/Hiram Davies territory.

2) When will Luke Hochevar be shown the door?
Midseason check-in: It appears, never, at this point. Hochevar has been solid in non-leverage situations, though pretty much every time he has been used with men on base in an inning, it has been a disaster.

3) Does Hosmer bounce back?
Midseason check-in: It took some time, but Hosmer's performance from June 1 on is probably the most encouraging thing about the 2013 season so far.
4) Can Moustakas hit for a whole season like he did in the first half of 2012?
Midseason check-in: Nope. Moustakas was god-awful, then great for about 3 weeks, then god-awful again. He has been better since he started working with Brett and Grafol but still has a long way to go.
5) Who regresses?
Midseason check-in: Welp, Alicides Escobar is not a surprising name here (though Yost's stubborn insistence on hitting him second is ridiculous). Billy Butler is a surprise. He isn't having a terrible year - still contributing a lot to the offense - but he's not hitting for the average or power he has displayed over the past several years.
6) Who plays 2B?
Midseason check-in: A whole bunch of people, and not that great. Gio is at least getting a shot, though he once again is not doing much with it.
7) Can Jeff Francoeur be at least replacement level, rather than epic horrible level?
Midseason check-in: Hahahahahahahahahahaha
8) Will Dayton Moore survive to see 2014?
Midseason check-in: Outlook uncertain. Probably still around, unless the team completely tanks in the second half and he does something foolish. My guess - he sacrifices Ned Yost this offseason and gets one more shot with a new manager in 2014.
9) Will Danny Duffy come back healthy? And if he does, is he the same, better or worse?
Midseason check-in: Yes. Velocity looks the same, and it looks likely he is the same guy as before.
10) And the big one: Has KC added enough to run down the big-money Detroit Tigers?
Midseason check-in: Doesn't look like it, does it?

I'd say we're facing a remodel more than a rebuild.

Say a new GM is hired. He sends Francoeur, Chen, Hochevar and Getz packing. $18.5 million saved.

A long-term extension with Santana can't be reached. $12 million saved.

Some of that money is going to go to pay increases for Guthrie, Gordon, Butler, Hosmer and Moustakas (I think it's about $10 million). That still leaves the Royals with enough cash to sign mid-level FAs at SP (if necessary) and a bat and not raise payroll from this season.

The new regime would still be dependent on Hosmer or Moustakas becoming a legit bat, but I still believe in the talent (Seitzer interview encouraged me there). If one of those guys becomes a legit bat, the lineup and rotation are probably good enough make 2014 a remodel rather than a rebuild.

You know, I was thinking, since we're doing "Salute the A's" night in July, maybe we should just do a salute to every visiting MLB team that comes into Kauffman this year. You know, make them feel welcome, invite their fans, encourage them to sweep us, that sort of thing.

Starting with Minnesota here's my ideas just for the AL Central. We can do this for every team, but let's start with the Central:

Minnesota: Free box of Wheaties to the first 10,000 fans. Harmon Killebrew Look Alike Contest (for women only). Twins get in free day, bring your Twin. Bert Blyleven Circle Jerk Night. Jerk off on TV until Bert circles you!

Chicago: Free "Gangsta-4-Life" chest tattoos to the first 10,000 women. William Ligue presides over a raffle. Winning ticket gets to attack the Royals first base coach. Bringing your child on the attack is optional. "Obama is my Homie" bumper sticker night.

Cleveland: Cleveland Steamer Night: Fake rubber poop for the first 10,000 fans. Free impersonators concert by fake Madonna, fake Bee Gees and fake Public Enemy, and other acts that don't belong in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. "Chris Perez Spat in my Face T-Shirt" night. Chief Wahoo American Indian Stereotype night: first 10,000 fans get a Chief Wahoo Indian Blanket.

Detroit: "Standing Ovation for Miguel Cabrerra" weekend. All fans encouraged to give Cabrerra a standing ovation every time he comes to bat or goes to his position at third base. I don't have anything particularly funny here, it's just that he's a triple crown winner, and we have no clue as to what its like to have a player like that on our team.

Oh, and free "Detroit is in First, Deal With It" T-shirt night.

C'mon Royals marketing wanks. If we're going to kiss up to visiting teams, lets get with the program!

Yeah, Charlie Finley held the city up for ransom for a new ballpark in 1967. He then fled to Oakland for a sweetheart deal. Then kicked the Royals to the curb from 1969 to 1975 in the AL West. They shat on us for seven years. So let's thank them for that.

Assholes.

Oh and BTW: They "began" in Philadelphia.

When the Cardinals were here, the Royals PR Wanks let Fred Bird run around OUR FIELD doing his mascot thing. Well, the two games in Kauffman were practically home games for St. Louis, since we know they OWN OUR ASSES. They treat us like their bitch, and we allow it. Pisses me off.

I’m sure “Oklahoma City Thunder appreciation night” would go over great in Seattle.

The Kansas City Royals today claimed outfielder Quintin Berry on waivers from the Detroit Tigers and immediately optioned him to Triple-A Omaha. Berry, 28, is a left-handed hitter who spent a large part of last season on the Detroit roster, hitting .258 in 94 games (75-for-291) with 44 runs scored, 10 doubles, six triples, two home runs and 29 RBI. The speedster also swiped 21 bases without being caught. A fifth round pick of the Phillies in 2006 out of San Diego State, Berry has also been in the San Diego, New York Mets and Cincinnati organizations prior to joining the Tigers. He has hit .168 in 49 games for Toledo (AAA) in the Tigers' chain this year with 15 stolen bases and only two caught stealing.

And he's automatically our second best outfielder.

Id replace Frenchy with him and make him bunt everytime. Has more of a chance to get on base doing that then frenchy free swinging.
