Too many factors have been left out. What kind of nuke and from who? If it is a major "nuclear power" you HAVE to retaliate in kind or you lose all future deterrence from your nuclear arsenal.

If it's Russia, and they nuke New York... you nuke Moscow and St Petersburg.

Of course you don't wait until the nuke hits, ours would be in the air within minutes of their launch.

As abhorrent as the outcome would be, there simply is no other alternative. Escalation dominance works and works very well, but only if you have the balls and stomach for it.

If north Korea happens to use their one working ICBM on a US base or city in our territories or states.

I voted No because I would rather be the country that prevented nuclear war rather than start it. I think the rest of the world would be outraged at the nuclear attack and would be behind us in bringing them down conventionally.

In spite of their constant yapping, i cant believe they would be stupid enough to do it.

We would level pyongyang and their regime would cease to exist, they must know that.
