My concern would be more to the point that they really don't know what the **** they are doing and don't understand some of the side effects that ****ing with the weather might have. Cloud seeding has been used since the 1950s. But it's still pretty much voodoo to the people using it. But that doesn't ****ing stop them from continuing their experiment.

Cloud Seeders Help Make It Rain Over Drought-Stricken Texas

Craig Funke's job is to fly a small plane to the edge of violent thunderstorms and back.

The former commercial pilot is not some adrenaline junkie courting danger. He is a cloud seeder in Pleasanton, Texas, chasing menacing storms to artificially prime the clouds to deliver extra rain over drought-stricken farmland.

"As a pilot through school you're taught to avoid thunderstorms, give them a 20 to 30-mile berth," Funke said. "You have to respect them, because they are dangerous, but with the proper training, you can negotiate them safely and do this job."

Funke's job entails firing chemicals into clouds in an ambitious attempt to modify the weather. He is, quite literally, a rain maker.

Texas is suffering from the largest drought in a half century, causing rising food prices and record wildfires. The drought is also suspected to be the cause for the recent surge in cases of West Nile virus.

Funke said cloud seeding can't break droughts, but farmers are getting desperate for solutions because they have endured four months of drought. Local water districts that manage the aquifers pay $0.04 an acre to keep Funke and his team up and running on a shoe-string budget.

Tommy Shearrer, the president of the Texas Weather Modification Association, which operates five cloud seeding programs around the state, was quick to explain that cloud seeding only enhances conditions in the atmosphere to produce more rain, but does not create weather.

"We don't manufacture clouds, and that's what gets me into trouble with a lot of folks who go, 'well, it was going to rain anyway, how do you know it was going to have any effect?'" he said. "If you look at the cloud as a factory, we're inducing a lot of raw materials into the factory so that the factory becomes more efficient and consequently more productive."

Shearrer's team of pilots and meteorologists are constantly scanning the skies for the right clouds to seed, but in the middle of a heavy drought, opportunities are few and far between. Sometimes several bone dry days will go by before a promising thunderstorm appears.

When a thunderstorm approaches, a meteorologist guides the cloud-seeding pilot. "Nightline" flew with Funke in a separate chase plane to watch the cloud-seeding pilot hunt for what they called the "inflow."

The inflow is essentially the lifeline of the storm, where a cloud sucks in moisture in order to produce rain. Once the pilot gets into the optimum position in the cloud, he waits for the green light from headquarters on the ground to start seeding. After an OK over the radio, the pilot releases flares containing silver iodide and calcium chloride particles, which collide with water particles and help produce more moisture.

Then within about 20 minutes, rain starts to fall. Long-term studies have shown that the chemicals released into the cloud have no harmful environmental impacts when they fall to the ground as rain.

"When you go out and you seed for a few hours or all day long and really know you did some good, it's a good feeling," Funke said.

The radar data collected after a day of seeding adds to a growing body of evidence that the process works. The data shows seeding can double the amount of moisture in a cloud and the Texas programs boast a 12 percent increase in annual rainfall because of seeding.

I wonder how many people believe that man's contribution to global warming is a myth, yet do believe that people can control the weather.

They are 'seeding' when it is already going to rain. A 12% increase in rainfall BECAUSE OF seeding? Yeah, right. Who has looked at this data?

First, I thought it was climate change now, not global warming.

Second, I'm sure that mankind is shitting in their own nest. And whether or not we are a major cause of climate change or just a drop in the ocean of time, we should be better stewards of our resources. But I don't think taxing the **** out of people is the solution.

Third, I don't think people can control the weather, but a lot of people sure are trying. I think the chance of ****ing something up is much greater than their chance of success.

that's awesome -- thx for posting.

Q: the article uses the term "cloud seeding programs" and I would like to know if this is a state funded project.

because, if so, the tinfoil hat wearing gubmint apologists are going to blow a gasket knowing they are wrong about "weather control programs by the USG"

in the world of R&D a 12% change is huge.

But then, I could see where it would mean nothing to a burger flipping loser.

There's a bit of a difference between cloud seeding to increase rain, and weather modification like Crazy Jones is talking about. Crazy Jones is putting forth the idea that the government is going 40 steps past cloud seeding, to the point of creating and/or directing hurricanes and tornadoes. Which is retarded.

OK, what does that have to do with my post? Most people could see that I was questioning if there really was a 12% change and how they could attribute it to seeding--and not whether 12% was significant. But, I could see where a burger flipping loser might not be able to follow along.

I think I made it pretty clear I agree with what you just said.

However, I do concede that if cloud seeding started in 1946 and people have been working on other forms of weather modification since that time, it is possible, however unlikely, that there might be some shit out there we haven't been told about.

Do I think they can create tornadoes and hurricanes? No.

Do I think that our government investigates and invests in batshit crazy technologies that may or may not pan out that they don't tell us about? Yup.

ah -- that is a different matter. the answer I have seen over the years is yes. And no.

Often referred as "the chicken or the egg" conundrum, the bottom line as I see it is there can be up to 12% improved mass using the chloride seeding method -- that's simple chemistry, but conditions must already exist -- rain must be eminent.

Here's an interesting article about our bestus friends nowadays -- the Chines are basically seeding routinely & regularly to keep from growing arms/heads out their collective asses;

Can China control the weather?

Downpours didn't snuff out the torch during the opening
ceremony of Beijing's 2008 Olympic Games. Was it a
matter of good luck or even better science?

In the* lead-up to the 2008 Summer Olympics, the People's Republic of China garnered a lot of press for all its housecleaning efforts. The country made strides toward cleaning up pollution, revamping public transportation and generally tidying up the city of Beijing. After all, the event promised to be the biggest party of the year, with the entire world invited to tune in. Authorities deterred potential party crashers by making it harder to visit the city and, yes, even requiring the visiting Luchadores to carry permits for their trademark Mexican wrestling masks.

If you've ever thrown a party, you too may have fretted over every detail concerning the evening. Will the guests think you're cheap if you don't use the good china? Will your kids be on their best behavior, or should you banish them to their rooms? Chinese officials faced similar worries heading into the summer games, only they took their micro planning to unheard of levels. See, the Aug. 8 opening ceremony happened to fall during a traditionally wet season for Beijing. To avoid any crimp in their plans, they decided to shoot down any cloud that looked as though it might try to enter the city uninvited.

That may sound extreme, but Chinese authorities didn't become such meteorological control freaks overnight. Chinese research into weather control dates back to 1958. Forty years later, the government-run Weather Modification Program launches thousands of specially designed rockets and artillery shells into the sky every year in an attempt to manipulate weather conditions.

Run by the Weather Modification Department, a division of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, the program employs and trains 32,000 to 35,000 people across China, some of them farmers, who are paid to handle anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers [source: Aiyar].

These heavy-duty weapons launch pellets containin*g silver iodide into clouds. Silver iodide is thought to concentrate moisture and cause rain, a process known as cloud seeding. China has invested heavily in this technology, using more than 12,000 anti-aircraft guns and rocket launchers in addition to about 30 planes [source: Aiyar].

With a population of more than 1.3 billion, China requires vast amounts of water. The government practices cloud seeding to try to produce rain for farmers, stave off drought, clear away air pollution and smog, fill water basins and, of course, produce a picture-perfect opening Olympic ceremony.

Were Chinese authorities successful in keeping their atmospheric gatecrashers at bay? And how does cloud seeding actually work? Read on to find out.
