(CNN) – Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the National Rifle Association, said "for all the noise and anger directed at us ... nobody has addressed the most important, pressing and immediate question we face: How do we protect our children right now ... in a way that we know works."

At a press event in Washington, LaPierre said U.S. society has left children "utterly defenseless."

A protester interrupted the NRA appearance before reporters with a banner accusing the NRA of killing children. The protester was led out of the room as he shouted anti-NRA slogans.

LaPierre added that violent crime is increasing in the U.S. due to a lack of willing to prosecute such acts.

Gun control isn't realistically going to get us much furhter either. Unless you forced everyone back to Revolutionary War era muzzle loading rifles (good luck with that), any whacko is going to be able to do an absurd amount of damage in a VERY short time with any kind of gun beyond the BB variety.

It's easy to overreact to such a tragedy. Again, I have no issue with having a panel of experts on security and schools assess what can realistically be done, but I doubt the answer lies in some kind of heightened gun control, and I'm 1000% confident it's not having some fool with a gun on school grounds.

mall cops walk around with a walkie-talkie and an attitude. Maybe pepper spray, but probably not.

I know its a cute phrase that you think might help support your argument, but calling armed guards "mall cops" is just flat-out silly.

As the NRA noted, we have armed guards at banks, some office buildings, courts, every federal building, and even sports stadiums.

Why are we wasting our money on those "mall cops"?

Most people's problem with this proposal comes from one or both of these:

1) "The NRA proposed it, and it was not gun control."

2) "If we do this, congress will very likely say 'good enough' and not implement any form of gun control, but I got my hopes up for pointless gun control laws that I supported for years, and to see them fail when I think we might be close is just unacceptable."

This is what I'm trying to say. Even NRA members agree that something should be done. Whoever is running the NRA are completely out of touch. **** them! I know I had people in my office (non gun owners) feeling good about potential change towards gun safety. Even they agree that no one is going to take our guns, but they were excited about possible change. After the NRA spoke today, they're all back to screaming at gun owners. **** the NRA leadership.

Sandy Hook is smaller, but there are many elementary/middle/high schools that are huge, campus-like facilities with mutiple buildings and entry points into the school.

Don't you understand that usually when these turds do this AS SOON AS they're confronted they either kill themselves or scatter off like pussies, because they're cowards and they take the easy way out?

They go to places like schools because there are no guns there

No guns = no threat to the criminal.

And there is already laws/background checks you have to go through before buying a firearm.

"something" does not equal any new gun control, at all. Requiring background checks for private-party transactions and gifts wont do jack to reduce gun violence, and the NRA members will not support whatever it is you probably think we need to do.

But they are mall cops essentially. They are low paying jobs with very little training. Basically they are there for show and hopefully to deter someone.

Assault weapons are less deadly than handguns, unless you are outside in a distance. I HOPE shooters continue to use these types of "military style weapons", because the guard will be using a gun that is more effective.
