Luke Joeckel may pique Chiefs’ interest at No. 1 overall

http://nfl.si.com/2013/01/08/luke-jo...-no-1-overall/

For as long as Luke Joeckel remains on the draft board in April, he’s likely to be seriously considered by whichever team happens to be on the clock.

The Chiefs, by virtue of holding the No. 1 overall pick, will have first crack at the standout Texas A&M offensive tackle. Joeckel finalized his plan Tuesday to enter the 2013 NFL Draft, according to multiple reports.

The 6-foot-6 Joeckel played a key role in Johnny Manziel’s sudden takeover of college football this season. Despite playing against elite SEC talent, week in and week out, Joeckel turned in a dominant 2012 and is considered to be, for now, the top available offensive lineman for the coming draft.

How strongly Kansas City leans toward Joeckel depends on a number of factors, not the least of which being Branden Albert’s pending free agency.

The Chiefs face the usual options with Albert set to hit the market: re-sign him, let him walk or slap the franchise tag on him. That third choice would cost the Chiefs just shy of $10 million, but it’s hard to see them allowing their starting left tackle to walk.

The variable that could push them toward that money-saving decision is Joeckel. If the Chiefs convince themselves in the coming couple of weeks that Joeckel is capable of filling Albert’s shoes, that swap may make sense for new head coach Andy Reid. Kansas City also might be intrigued by the prospect of Joeckel at left tackle and Albert at guard — the Chiefs need to address their interior line, too, now that guard Ryan Lilja has decided to retire.

Unfortunately for Reid and the Chiefs, the top of this year’s draft class does not have an obvious No. 1 pick — unlike the 2012 draft, where the Colts had their choice between Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Given Kansas City’s obvious needs (quarterback, receiver and linebacker, for starters), that lack of a clear superstar has to be even more frustrating.

Which is why Joeckel has a shot to go No. 1, should Albert hit free agency and a huge K.C. roster hole suddenly meshes with the available draft talent.

Even if Joeckel slides past the Chiefs, though, he will find no shortage of teams interested in his talent — so much so, in a few cases, that the rest of the top 5 (Jacksonville, Oakland, Philadelphia and Detroit) might be able to swing a draft-day trade contingent on Joeckel’s availability.

But any of that quartet also could make a case for Joeckel early. Both the Jaguars and Raiders had huge issues at right tackle; the Eagles struggled all over their line (save for Evan Mathis), and are still awaiting Jason Peters’ return from an Achilles injury; and the Lions might be shorthanded, even with 2012 first-rounder Riley Reiff in tow, if Jeff Backus retires and Gosder Cherilus leaves in free agency.

All those teams will have to wait to see what the Chiefs do as a 2013 draft opener. Given Joeckel’s potential as an NFL lineman and the lack of elite prospects, a match could be made at No. 1 overall.

If Pioli trades for Cassel, I'll defer to the former's opinion since no one knows the player better.

No one save a fair number of posters on this site, of course.

Thanks for ignoring my entire point, jackass.

Let's say the field of dentistry had a success rate of operations the same as a GM making decisions for a football team. I'll bet you people wouldn't trust dentists so much. And yes, they WOULD question every single procedure, technique, and brand of tool that you use. They'd demand accountability. And above all, they themselves would try to learn as much as they could about dentistry.

Thankfully the field of dentistry is not that way. But the NFL Draft IS that way. It's a crapshoot. Even the great GMs (like hopefully Dorsey) are lucky to get a 50% return on any given draft. It's a case where quite often fans and sports bloggers are just as successful at picking out really good football players as professional scouts/GMs/experts. If you don't believe me, check out some of the teams drafted by CP's own in the Chiefs Planet Mock Draft we hold every year.

That doesn't mean fans are capable of doing what Dorsey does, but it DOES mean that we're educated in his field just enough to be skeptical consumers of the product he serves us (the Chiefs football team). We're the ones who buy the tickets, merchandise, and spend our Sundays watching football and talking about it on the internet. It's enough of an investment that we should absolutely question his decision-making. And you know what? More often than not we'll be right just as often as we're wrong. The exact same percentage you see from most NFL executives.

I'm not comparing them. I'm trying to illustrate the obviouse fact that people in the FO are paid to scout players and go over tape from angles and sources that people on CP don't, and won't ever see. They interview players and have direct insight about players from their college coaches. And yet, if they don't do what some shmo on CP wants them to do, said schmo will be pissed at them. why so difficult to understand.

Sometimes access to all of that information can be a negative. It can cause you to overlook some of the most simplest fundamentals. Can the man play football or not, and is he a major character risk?

I don't care how much they get paid, sometimes, just like on CP, we over analyze things even though the answer to your question is staring you right in the face.

Shit like that is how "The Right 53" is born.

Don't forget, this is Dorsey's first gig as a GM. It's not like he's a proven commodity.

Being called a jackass for having a different opinion that you says quite a bit about you. Now, lets see if you can understand this. Forget what I do for a living for a moment if you would. Fans can be skeptical all they want. They pay the money that runs the NFL. However, to insinuate that fans know as much about the players coming out of college as the NFL FO people is ludicrous. And if you accept that as fact, then to say a fan would be "pissed" at a draft pick, before the player even has a chance to don pads, is ludicrous. We, as fans, have the benefit of hindsight to bash these guys picking the college players, so don't act like you've got it all figured out. If you do, then why don't you write down all the guys you think every team should draft, round by round, and why. We can then discuss this in three years to see if you have any credibility.

It seems that you're phrasing this as a pejorative, while I view skepticism as healthy, a positive sign of critical thinking.

As many of us noted with Pioli, he (or anyone else) doesn't need to do anything we want or advise, but he has to be right. No excuses.

yep, agreed. I've got guys I hope we draft too. If the powers that be don't draft them, then I'll wait a couple of years before I'm critical. It is an inexact science, but one that I have more trust in them being able to handle than the general public. I'm still skeptical, but I'm reasonably skeptical, as I know my knowledge base and resourses compared to theirs.

If Dorsey and Reid chose to pass on Geno Smith and go off the reservation by taking a guy that is considered a reach, fine. I applaud them for making their own decision and I hope it works out.

But...if the player they choose doesn't live up to their expectations and Geno goes on to destroy worlds, they deserve the ridicule for their poor decision and us on CP will be right again.

Just like any previous coach/ Gm combo, I tend to give them just enough rope to hang themselves with.

However, this is a unique situation in that it's probably the biggest offseason this franchise has had in quite some time. Can't have a swing and a miss in regards to player acquisition.
