Is Obama intentionally using confrontation to drive a wedge into the right?

This editorial by Pat Buchanan seems to think so, in order to create a new majority using Positive Polarization. In the past it was FDR and Nixon who did this successfully.

Here's another clash coming aside from the clash on guns and the debt limit:

Quote:
If Hagel is confirmed, Republican resistance will have been routed. If Hagel is rejected, the Republican Party will be damaged in the eyes of many for having trashed a patriot, war hero and friend of veterans who put America first and wanted no more unnecessary wars.
Don't do it Republicans because you're outside the mainstream on aggressive war.

Quote:
The president has many weapons in his coming clashes with the congressional Republicans. He has the presidency itself, the bully pulpit. He has forums like the Inaugural Address and State of the Union that Republicans cannot match.

He has a press that deeply dislikes the Republican right and serves as his echo chamber. And while the White House speaks with a single voice, the Republican Party is a cacophony of voices.

I think they are trying to drive a wedge between the entire country.

Has their ever been a time in which the country has been this divided? It's horrible.

Yeah, some are predicting civil war even. I think elections being much closer is a sign of that too. Still, Obama seems to be using it for it to be even more the case.

Divide and conquer.

It's been a basic device for destroying since the dawn of man.

Really? Well, it's been written by plenty of others in the past. That's what they tried to do in Latin America. Standard op.

He has always said it. Say it enough, and he will be correct eventually.

It's pretty clear Obama can't get much done unless the GOP cracks its ranks like it did on the fiscal cliff. That makes pushing his legislative agenda easier.

You typically don't embrace political strategies to make your opponents stronger, you embrace strategies to weaken them and make policy friendlier to what you'd prefer.

Guess who proposed it before that? On September 11, 1991 no less. (ohhhhh Conspiracy). George Herbert Walker Bush in his joint session of Congress speech.

Quote:
Until now, the world we’ve known has been a world divided—a world of barbed wire and concrete block, conflict and cold war. Now, we can see a new world coming into view. A world in which there is the very real prospect of a new world order. In the words of Winston Churchill, a "world order" in which "the principles of justice and fair play ... protect the weak against the strong ..." A world where the United Nations, freed from cold war stalemate, is poised to fulfill the historic vision of its founders. A world in which freedom and respect for human rights find a home among all nations

I can't see that as the same category of thing since the Cold War ended.
