Chiefs’ offensive players stack third preseason game highs
By Amie Just+ On August 28, 2015

KANSAS CITY, Mo. –The Chiefs capped off their third-straight preseason win for the first time since 1980, steamrolling the Tennessee Titans 34-10.

Through rain and shine, but mostly rain by the fourth quarter, the Chiefs had their fair share of high moments and low moments.

HIGHS

• Quarterback Alex Smith set preseason records of his own with his performance. His 171 yards passing was his best mark ever during the preseason. He connected on 16-of-18 passes, completing 88.9 percent of his throws.

• Wide receiver Jeremy Maclin charged up and down the field, catching seven passes on eight targets. One of those receptions landed him in the end zone for second time of this preseason. His 65 receiving yards were the most he’s had in the preseason in a Kansas City uniform (12 against Arizona, 22 against Seattle).

Maclin sang high praises of working alongside Smith.

“For starters, he’s talented,” Maclin said. “He has what it takes to play in this league at a very high level. For two, he’s a very intelligent person. When you combine those two things and my ability to talk to him and vice versa, it makes everything a lot easier. I’m still looking forward to working with him.”

• Wide receiver Fred Williams overcame his hiccup against Seattle and rebounded with catching all five of the passes that came his way for 62 yards and two touchdowns.

• Running back Jamaal Charles racked up more carries in the second drive alone than he did against Arizona and Seattle combined. Charles had three rushing attempts on the night for 26 yards.

• Rookie wide receiver Chris Conley continued to make strides after sustaining a strained knee during training camp. He caught three passes for 30 yards, two of which coming from former Georgia teammate quarterback Aaron Murray.

“We definitely still have chemistry,” Conley said. “Aaron’s a great friend of mine. He’s a great football player and a great guy. Being able to reunite with him on the field is something special. Not a lot of people get to do that from college to the NFL. It’s a great opportunity for us.”

BONUS

• Safety Eric Berry recorded his first tackle since making his inspiring return after beating Hodgkin lymphoma. The former Tennessee Volunteer brought down former Chiefs wide receiver, current Titans running back Dexter McCluster on a 17-yard run in the third quarter.

LOWS

• Tight end Travis Kelce and Smith had a whoops moment in the first quarter. Kelce was wide open with room to run and Smith threw the ball right to him. However, miscommunication got the best of the read and Kelce missed the catch.

• Kicker Cairo Santos fell victim to the lengthened extra point distance for the first time this week. On the first extra-point attempt of the game, Santos shanked the kick wide left.

• Murray spent the majority of the game under center, but his time on the field didn’t start off so hot. On his third play of the game, he threw the lone interception of the game.

“I was way too juiced up,” Murray said. “It was a poor decision on my pass. I should have run or thrown the ball out of bounds. It’s something you learn in this game. You make little mistakes like that and these guys are amazing on defense and they’re going to make a play. I’ll go back and watch the film and get better.

• A torrential downpour served with thunder and lightning resulted in the game being cancelled with 3:50 remaining in the fourth quarter.
