Here's what Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick told me on Jan. 14 (3 wks after this "investigation" was launched) about Manti Te'o:
“I have worked in sports for 30-plus years, and he’s absolutely unique,” Swarbrick said. “I’ve worked with Olympians, college All-Americans, professional athletes … and the closest experience I have had (to Te’o) is Peyton Manning.
“In terms of embracing the values of the place in which they play, just as Peyton came to represent Indianapolis, Manti represents this (school). If Notre Dame was going to get good again, it was so important to have someone like Manti Te’o lead it because his values line up with the values of the institution.”

Before this, whenever I thought about Notre Dame, the names Lou Holtz or Joe Montana sprang to mind, maybe even Tim Brown. I never once associated Manti Te'o with anything significant to the school. Hell, I'd never even heard of him before this season.
