Do you favor universal background checks?

Ninety-two percent of Americans favor background checks for all potential gun buyers, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll.

Universal background checks are one of the proposals that President Obama has called on Congress to pass as part of his proposal to combat gun violence in the wake of the massacre in a Newtown, Conn., elementary school in December.

Licensed gun dealers already must run background checks, but unlicensed dealers and private sellers, many of whom sell guns at gun shows or over the internet, are not required to do so.

Support for universal background checks went across party lines:
89 percent of Republicans
93 percent of Democrats and Independents were in favor
93 percent of gun households
85 percent of those living in a household with a member of the National Rifle Association

Chicago is also trying to pass a law that would require people to report when they've had a gun stolen. I don't know all the details but it seems logical to me as a way to track whether people are honestly having their guns stolen, or are lazy with their responsibilities or are trafficking. Again, that doesn't mean if you have a gun stolen, you'll lose your FOID or FFL, but it will be a way to track negligent/immoral/illegal actions.

If you haven't, I urge you to watch the Daily Show segment on the ATF. In it, they report that gun dealers are sometimes only evaluated ONCE every 17 YEARS!

How would this work? If I sell my 12 gu trap gun to lets say BRC, how would I check his background? Say I'm not on the internet, 80 years old, and Im selling it cause I no longer need it through an ad in the Warsaw Missouri paper. How will this work? And if i dont run the check, who will know? We dont register guns. No one knows I even have said gun. No one. And no one will know I sold it to BRC. And no one will know he bought it

This idea we can do background checks on every gun buyer in every transaction is insane. Do we do a backgrond check on car buyers? If I sell a car to BRC do I check to see if he has a drivers lic? Does he drink? Have tickets? Insurance? No. I sign the title and he takes it to DMV. Do they check? No. They say that will be 45 dollars, your title will be mailed in 2 weeks

Background checks by FFL dealers Im cool. And at gunshows sure as much as you can. But you cant begin to enforce this sort of thing if BRC and I cut the deal in the parking lot. And no one is going to do this stuff if grandpa gives lil Jimmy an old 22 for his birthday. Will we toss lil Jimmy in the clink? Or grandpa?

No, you can't stop every parking lot deal, but if the buyer is caught with said gun in an illegal manner, the person that sold it to him w/o following procedure is in hot water.

So if i give my son a gun I have owned since I was a kid, and he commits a crime you put me in jail? Your background check only filters those who have a record. Your idea just makes honest folks into law breakers. It has zero impact or positive impact on anything whatsoever

Do you think joe drugpusher will abide by any of these rules? Will background checks have had any impact on the scholl shooting in Conn? Would Gabby Giffords have not been shot?

Being an avid gun owner I have no problem with a law that makes a buyer fill out a form and have his background checked before selling it to him.

Doing so eliminates me of any liability if he's a DA and kills someone with it.

No, because if you follow procedure, you gave it to him legally.

Again, you have to start somewhere. Some laws address some issues, some address others. It isn't fair to say one law won't stop one type of criminal so there's no reason to have that law.

Start somewhere that makes sence. We do not register firearms in the US. There is no such registry. It does not exist. No one knows who owns what gun or how many. My point is this idea is unworkable and not even possible to implement. Its a fools erand. And it does not address a problem nor solve an issue.
