***OFFICIAL*** 2013 STL Cardinals Thread

From Bernie's column:

People have asked me why we’re not more emotional,” Matheny said in his office after Sunday’s game. “They say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. That’s what got us here. This isn’t the time to change it.”

It’s hard to argue with the manager’s assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.

Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.

The Cardinals’ veterans still haven’t forgotten. They still aren’t over it. It’s why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliak’s urgings to smile and put on a happier face.

Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:

* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.

The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.

The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.

The Cardinals really earned this.
Thanks for reading ...
— Bernie

They can't hit lefties, can't hit inside pitches, have absolutely no power, no speed, and the back 3/5 of their rotation is average at best.

I got fooled by this team, but they're fraudulent. Probably an 88-90 win team at best right now.
I don't necessarily agree; SS & CF are issues, I agree, but the pitching staff is still among the best in MLB. But I do agree, some holes need to be plugged, but that doesn't explain why they've just quit. IMO, that falls on Matheny.

Their RISP average is completely unsustainable, as are Yadi's and Craig's averages given their BABIP and lack of power.

Freese is just not a good hitter anymore. For that matter, neither is Holliday. He can't hit anything over 90 MPH.

It's too easy to pitch to them, it's not a particularly good defensive team, and it has no speed. This team is going nowhere.

Yadi is headed to St. Louis for an MRI on his knee.

Great work, guys. In no way could anyone have seen this coming.

I'm okay with trading Freese this off season. He still has value. Preferably as part of a package to get an upgrade at SS.

Carpenter 3B
Wong 2B
Beltran RF
Craig 1B
Taveras CF
Molina C
Holliday LF
Anyone but Kozma SS
Pitcher spot

Beltran and Adams are the only ones that can hit the ball over the fence but we cant let Craig sit on the bench and how do we let Beltran go?

If you've seen Beltran hit over the last month it's pretty clear that we can let him go.

Freese has no trade value, and Carpenter's bat doesn't profile at 3rd. It just doesn't. Ryan Jackson has regressed heavily over the last month, and looks no better than Kozma.

Make the qualifying offer to Beltran and take the pick. Start Adams at 1st and stick Craig in right.

Well looks like the Cards have expressed interest in Aybar. What would you be willing to give up? Kozma is absolutely killing this team and I would give up one of our prospects for him except for Taveras.

This was going to happen eventually. It's a shame Taveras has been hurt or else he could've been the bat we need to give life to this lineup.

Since Rangers are open to listening to any offer, Cards need to realistically see if Profar is available. He may not be the immediate bat we need, but he could lock down SS for years.

We have excess pitching prospects so offer up Martinez and some other combinations for him (not Taveras, Miller, or Wacha).

Somebody remind Holliday Dallas is closer to Oklahoma than St. Louis. Holliday for Profar or Andrus, throw in Manass or Blazek if needed. Cruz is likely to have a hefty PED suspension coming that could take him out of the pennant race. Don't let any of our top prospects go for a starting pitcher.

Matheny is a terrible ****ing manager. People gave him the benefit of the doubt because he was gifted an amazing roster that even he couldn't really **** up last year. The dipshit literally rode Yadi until his knee blew up. This is what happens when you hire guys with really no coaching experience.

You'd think a former catcher might be a bit more on the ball with this shit, too.

Let's not also forget that after Dave Duncan left, Mo didn't go out and hire an actual pitching coach, but promoted the guy that got Duncan his morning coffee. With a real manager and a real pitching coach, that could mean several more wins. Jury is out on Mabry, but that's because McGwire was a flaming abortion.

I don't have an accurate read on Lilliquist, so I'm not going to chuck him under the bus.

However, I would want little of Profar. He has been absolutely awful this year. Kozma, despite one of the worst offensive seasons ever, has been worth almost a full win more than Profar. Furthermore, name the last Rangers prospect they signed/drafted and developed that lived up to the hype.

Oh, and Elvis Andrus is hitting every bit as poorly as Kozma.

It might just be time to accept that, save firing Matheny, the problems this team has are not fixable in a manner that is in the best interest of the franchise.

If you want to trade Adams and Jenkins for Profar, then fine, but even that might be a stretch.

I do know one thing about him. There have been several games this year when he waited several batters too long to waddle his fat ass out to the mound to talk to a struggling pitcher. I don't know how good he is behind the scenes in working with the pitchers but I know he has the ability to be absolutely awful in his in-game management.
