***OFFICIAL*** 2013 STL Cardinals Thread

From Bernie's column:

People have asked me why weíre not more emotional,Ē Matheny said in his office after Sundayís game. ďThey say that we look subdued, always intense. That our actions are methodical, robotic at times. Thatís what got us here. This isnít the time to change it.Ē

Itís hard to argue with the managerís assessment. The Cardinals finished with 97 victories, most by a Cards team since 2005, and tied with Boston for No. 1 in the majors this year.

Their 54-27 showing at Busch Stadium matches the 1985 team for the best single-season home winning percentage (.667) by the Cardinals since 1944.

A postseason theme has emerged, and it echoes the mantra that surfaced before the start of 2013: remember the fall of 2012. Remember falling to San Francisco in the NLCS.

The Cardinalsí veterans still havenít forgotten. They still arenít over it. Itís why Matheny resists GM John Mozeliakís urgings to smile and put on a happier face.

Here's the most impressive aspect of the Cardinals' division championship: they prevailed over two other outstanding teams, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati.

The 97-win Cardinals were better this year (regular season) than they were in 2011, when they won 90 games, and 2012, when they won 88.
Here are a few numbers that help put the Cardinals' Central title and No. 1 NL seed in perspective:

* Since MLB switched to a three-division format in each league in 1994, this was only the sixth time that a division had three 90-plus win teams. St. Louis won 97, Pittsburgh 94, and Cincinnati 90.
* Since the format change, this was only the second time that an NL division had three 90-win teams. In 2002 the NL West had Arizona (98 wins), San Francisco (95) and Los Angeles (92).
* The 2013 Cardinals faced more esteemed and difficult competition at the top of the division than any of the division-winning teams managed by Tony La Russa.

The Pirates were hardly pushovers; the Cardinals had to work like mad and kick in with a strong finish to put the division away, and didn't clinch until Game No. 160.

The Cardinals went 9-10 against Pittsburgh this season and were 11-8 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cardinals won only three of 10 games at PNC Park in Pittsburgh and split the 10 games at Cincinnati. The Cardinals were 6-3 against both teams at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals (1st), Pirates (3rd) and Reds (5th) ranked among the top five in wins in the NL. The three teams were among the top 11 in wins in MLB. All three teams finished in the top five in the majors for best overall ERA, and each were in the top five MLB for best starting-pitching ERA.

The original purpose to this piece was to point out that the Cardinals managed to finish with the league's best record while competing in a division that had three 90-win teams for only the second time in the last 19 years of National League baseball.

The Cardinals really earned this.
Thanks for reading ...
ó Bernie

Haven't actually been to Busch since '09. The last two times I went Pujols hit a grand slam. I've got photos on my desktop of the actual swing. We had seats right behind home plate. The last time I went we sat in the left field loge and Freese hit his first career HR against the Astros.

Sadly we are just about out of arms.

Mujica threw three straight days, Rosenthal pitched Saturday and Sunday. Maness threw 25 pitches yesterday. You can't throw those guys every day unless you are Joe Torre or Dusty Baker and you want to ruin them.

It'd be nice if Sanchez was reasonably healthy and Rzepczynski and Boggs were worth a ****, but they aren't.

The Cardinals needed 7-8 from Shelby tonight and a good offensive performance and they got neither. Hope for a laugher tomorrow to get the pen arms a little more rest.

Where is Martinez? why bring him up if you don't use him?

I'm thinking that maybe he is the trade bait in a future trade. If they are not going to bring up Wacha because they don't want to start the clock why bring up Martinez and not use him?

The Cardinals left Sanchez off the 40 man roster when they promoted Lyons. Cubs got him.

Wonder what Sanchez did to get on their shit list?

Love his stuff, but if he could throw strikes, he would've been on the team this year AND last.

What do you all think of Jocketty? He's made Cinci a damn good team too. I would've killed to get him to KC but we don't deserve him anyway. He's a threat in that division seemingly every year.

Wacha profiles as a #2/#1 starter and it's his second year of pro ball. Martinez has electric stuff, but there are so many unknowns about him. Think about it this way: If they start the clock on Miller, Wacha, and Martinez simultaneously, not only are they putting a lot of stress on their arms at a young age, but they are also making them all of them FA eligible simultaneously.

Mozeliak has to think about the team this year and in the future. Although it's tempting to throw caution to the wind and bring up Wacha right now, that doesn't mean it's the best move in the long-term interests of the franchise. With the way Matt Carpenter has handled 2B, which has been absolutely tremendous, they might be better off flipping Wong for bullpen help similar to the way they moved Cox last year.

Carpenter leads the batters in WAR right now.

Can't throw strikes and can't stay healthy. He also got his ass handed to him in AAA last year, then pitched 8 innings this year before getting hurt. He walks almost six batters per nine.

A reliever who lobs it over the middle of the plate is worth more than an asshole who throws 96 but can't hit his own ass. See: Marmol, Carlos.

Probably one of the best at extracting maximal trade value and buying low on veteran reclamation projects. He did it in St. Louis with Chris Carpenter. The Rolen, Edmonds, Wainwright/Marquis/Fat Ray King, and McGwire trades were outright theft.

His drafts were generally ok. Hit the lottery with Pujols. Molina was obviously a tremendous pick. Rick Ankiel looked like a phenomenal selection until he went Section 8, but towards the end our farm system really suffered until Jeff Luhnow gained more influence in the development of the system and selection of picks.

If Jocketty didn't handle the draft I'd consider him the best in baseball.

The Cardinals have proven that the can develop pitching and talent. I'm okay with Wacha staying down in AAA so that this year doesn't start the clock.
Imagine this 2014 Starting staff:
Waino
Miller
Wacha
Lynn
Rosenthal/Martinez/?

The importance of the draft will only continue to increase in the coming years. He may start to slide because of that but I liked Jocketty and still do.
