USPS to end Saturday mail

RIP....

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2013...to-trim-costs/

The U.S. Postal Service plans to announce Wednesday that it will end Saturday mail delivery, in one of the most significant steps taken to date to cut costs at the struggling agency.

A source familiar with the decision confirmed the plan to Fox News.

Under the proposal, the Postal Service will continue to deliver packages six days a week. The plan, which is aimed at saving about $2 billion, would start to take effect in August.

The move accentuates one of the agency's strong points -- package delivery has increased by 14 percent since 2010, officials say, while the delivery of letters and other mail has declined with the increasing use of email and other Internet use.

Under the new plan, mail would still be delivered to post office boxes on Saturdays. Post offices now open on Saturdays would remain open on Saturdays.

Over the past several years, the Postal Service has advocated shifting to a five-day delivery schedule for mail and packages -- and it repeatedly but unsuccessfully appealed to Congress to approve the move. Though an independent agency, the service gets no tax dollars for its day-to-day operations but is subject to congressional control.

It was not immediately clear how the service could eliminate Saturday mail without congressional approval.

But the agency clearly thinks it has a majority of the American public on its side regarding the change.

Material prepared for the Wednesday press conference by Patrick R. Donahoe, postmaster general and CEO, says Postal Service market research and other research has indicated that nearly 7 in 10 Americans support the switch to five-day delivery as a way for the Postal Service to reduce costs

Yes, they had a filibuster-proof majority. Independents (Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman) caucus and vote with the democrats. From the time Arlen Specter switched parties until the time that Ted Kennedy died, Harry Reid controlled a filibuster-proof majority.

For all these supposed problems W created, the democrats sure didn't get around to fixing any of them. I guess they finally got around to letting tax cuts on those making over $400k expire, so there is that. Quite an accomplishment.

I finally have slow DSL. The post office will deliver, but they won't get out of their car to deliver a package because my mailwoman is afraid of my friendly dog.

Really? I wonder why they even bother taking an actual vote.

So, now that we've settled that there were never 60 Democrats, you can also factor in stuff like Al Franken arriving late because of recounts, Obama had to be replaced, and there were serious long-term illnesses. I could look up all the details I suppose, and I may do so later.

No one ever said there were 60 democrats. The democrats controlled a filibuster proof majority though. It's not at all impressive that you've identified that Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders don't have (D) next to their name in the paper. No need to bother looking up all the details since none of them will change the bottom line.

You said that. Filibuster-proof majority = 60

Even with your two psuedo-crats, I bet most of the time there were only 57 or 58 "Democrats."

There were 60 in the majority for several months. That two of them were democrat-voting, left-wing independents is of no significant consequence.

The only people who that matters to are people looking for excuses to blame for the I effectiveness of that overwhelming majority.
