(CNN) -- A former Los Angeles police officer who police say has violently threatened his former colleagues shot at least two officers early Thursday, killing one, sparking a huge manhunt in Southern California, according to authorities.
Christopher Jordan Dorner, 33, is also wanted in a double slaying Sunday in Irvine, California.
The California Highway Patrol issued an alert Thursday morning urging officers in several Southern California counties to be on the lookout for Dorner after the overnight shootings.
Two officers in Riverside were shot, one fatally, police there confirmed to CNN. CNN affiliate KTLA reported another officer was shot in Corona, California.
Irvine police identified Dorner on Wednesday as the suspect in the February 3 deaths of Keith Lawrence and Monica Quan in Irvine.
Dorner also has made violent threats against other Los Angeles police officers, the agency said Wednesday.
"I will bring unconventional and asymmetrical warfare to those in LAPD uniform whether on or off duty," Dorner allegedly wrote in a lengthy letter promising retribution against the department, where he worked from 2005 until 2008. An LAPD source provided the document to CNN.
The letter writer claimed he was terminated for reporting excessive force by a fellow officer, and said his attacks were retribution for his termination, as well as a culture of racism and violence he says continues within the department.
He called the attacks against police "a necessary evil that I do not enjoy but must partake and complete for substantial change to occur within the LAPD and reclaim my name."
Los Angeles police warned people who encounter Dorner not to approach him, saying he is likely "armed and extremely dangerous."
"Our department is implementing all measures possible to ensure the safety of our LAPD personnel, their families and the Los Angeles community, and will continue to do so until Dorner is apprehended and all threats have been abated," police said in a statement.

Of course he cares. So far he's just walking up to people and blasting away. That's a lot easier to do when you know nobody's armed or people aren't looking for it. Why do you think he hasn't whacked anybody else? He says he's got his sniper rifle and can kill anybody from a mile away, but he hasn't used it yet. Claims to be a bad ass super soldier hell bent on taking out every cop in Kalifornia, but apparently there weren't any out and about today. Maybe he's not quite the angel of death his bullshit manifesto would lead us all to believe.

I believe he tried renting a boat first and was denied. So his secondary plan was the mountains. I don't think he is prepared for this, if he was he would've done this first. I mean if you had really planned this out you would go there first and hole up. Does Mr. Dorner have a place all prepared up there somewhere with food, water, ammo some weapons and a blankie ready for him. I seriously doubt it.

It won't take him long at all for him to give into desperation in these temperatures and die. I checked it will get down to 16 degrees tonight and with -6 windchill. I think he will probably freeze to death.

They will find him, but frozen to death IMO.

I would guess it might take a while to find his body if this is the case, get the canine units out and hasten the chase to find his dead rotting corpse covered in snow.

Two inches of snow Friday coated the mountaintop pine trees and roads around Big Bear Lake, leading motorists to use tire chains. Up to six more inches were expected. But the snow was regarded as a godsend because tracking a man on the run would be easier, authorities said.

Despite the intense search, authorities allowed nearby ski resorts to remain open Friday because they don't believe Dorner is in Big Bear Lake. At one point, a smiling snowboarder whizzed by police and media, seemingly oblivious to an ongoing news conference and the seriousness of the manhunt.

Jay Obernolte, mayor of Big Bear Lake community, described Friday as having "a beautiful winter morning." Residents weren't fearful, he said, adding that "many of the people here are armed."

"Is there panic in our community?" Obernolte asked reporters rhetorically. "No, there is no panic. We're a hardy people in the San Bernardino Mountains."

This is what happening. He not in the mountain area he ditch his truck and got another automobile to get away from the area he used roads not much traveled on to throw the cops off his trail. He somewhere where he can blend in and use cash for transactions to not be traced. He will strike again because he loves the attentions he getting from his heroes.

My understanding is the from the time he set the truck ablaze and someone noticed and called 911, it was an hour before the cops got to the scene. Plenty of time to get far away.

From what I heard it was either in a trash receptacle, or on top of a trash receptacle. Either way it was in plain site for someone to see. I believe it was a wallet with his driver's license and other ID in it.
