$4Billion. To the Palestinians. Good Grief.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013...tinian-economy

John Kerry revealed his long-awaited plan for peace in the Middle East on Sunday, hinging on a $4bn (2.6bn) investment in the Palestinian private sector.

The US secretary of state, speaking at the World Economic Forum on the Jordanian shores of the Dead Sea, told an audience including Israeli president Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas that an independent Palestinian economy is essential to achieving a sustainable peace.

Speaking under the conference banner "Breaking the Impasse", Kerry announced a plan that he promised would be "bigger, bolder and more ambitious" than anything since the Oslo accords, more than 20 years ago.

Tony Blair is to lead a group of private sector leaders in devising a plan to release the Palestinian economy from its dependence on international donors. The initial findings of Blair's taskforce, Kerry boasted, were "stunning", predicting a 50% increase in Palestinian GDP over three years, a cut of two-thirds in unemployment rates and almost double the Palestinian median wage. Currently, 40% of the Palestinian economy is supplied by donor aid.

Kerry assured Abbas that the economic plan was not a substitute for a political solution, which remains the US's "top priority".

Peres, who had taken the stage just minutes before, also issued a personal plea to his Palestinian counterpart to return to the negotiations.

"Let me say to my dear friend President Abbas," Peres said, "Should we really dance around the table? Lets sit together. You'll be surprised how much can be achieved in open, direct and organised meetings."

That's a lot. But we have always given aid to both sides. Nothing new here.

I could care less about our politicians IQ points. However, I would like a measurement of their common sense points before I vote for them.

I agree...and thieves too. I wouldn't doubt the money will end up in something the politicians have money invested in.

There's only one politician I know that does not support aid to the Palestinians—former Rep Ron Paul (R) from Texas. Paul has said our government gives far more money to Israel’s enemies taken all together, even if Israel gets more individually.

"Most other Middle East countries get money too, some of which ends up in the hands of Palestinian terrorists (...) Yet while we call ourselves a strong ally of the Israeli people, we send billions in foreign aid every year to some Muslim states that many Israelis regard as enemies. From the Israeli point of view, many of the same Islamic nations we fund with our tax dollars want to destroy the Jewish state.(...)"

"We have adopted a foreign policy that has left Israel surrounded by militaristic nations while undermining Israel's sovereignty by demanding that its foreign and defense policies be essentially pre-approved in Washington." He later added: "The United States should take care of its own sovereignty while at the same time respecting the sovereignty of nations like Israel. That is the best way to preserve security and prosperity for all."

As a side note, Paul was "one of the few in Congress who did not condemn1981 Israeli bombing of Osirak (Iraq) when practically all – including Reagan's entire administration – condemned Israel." ( Jose Cohen ) http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig9/cohen1.html

Would like to see us invest in the Mexican infrastructure. If we'd have put the money into them we put into China we'd be much better off today.

Why would our government do something logical?

Very likely throwing away good money BUT if they could somehow manage to NOT waste it (fat chance) than creating a stable and healthy economy is a good step towards making terrorism and extremism less appealing.. not just in Palestine but throughout the region where the situation in Palestine gives other extremists an excuse and a platform to build recruitment upon.

Of course it isn't our "job" to do so but it could certainly be to our benefit.

I've been to those refugee camps in the West Bank and Gaza. The young men are so pissed off. They are fertile ground for the terriosts to recruit. They see their mom carry water for a mile each day. They sleep on basically mud floors sometimes. It just breeds hate and resentment.

Now the rich Muslim countries could alleviate some of this suffering but its just not politically possible. They are pawns in the politics of the middle east.

As Austin chief said, its in our interest to at least put on an appearance that we care, then Hamas's message won't gain as much traction. It's money well spent if it improves the life's of those in the camps. And we get credit for the improvement.

They will still hate us. But this will never be about us being best friends. The Israeli's are are friends. the best we can hope for is that they have no interest in taking up arms against us. Avoid them seeing the Hamas camps and schools as their only chance to avoid hunger.

Good points, BRC.

It just worries me that some of that money could trickle down to fund even more terrorism. Could we have just funded our next 9-11?
