Pope Benedict Seeking Immunity?
Pope Benedict to seek immunity and protection from Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on February 23 Posted on February 14, 2013 by itccs
http://itccs.org/2013/02/14/pope-ben...n-february-23/ Pope Benedict, Joseph Ratzinger, has scheduled a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano for Saturday, February 23 to discuss securing protection and immunity from prosecution from the Italian government, according to Italian media sources. Ratzinger's meeting follows upon the apparent receipt by the Vatican of a diplomatic note from an undisclosed European government on February 4, stating its intention to issue an arrest warrant for Ratzinger, who resigned from his pontificate less than a week later. In response to the February 23 meeting, the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State (ITCCS), through its field Secretary, Rev. Kevin Annett, has written to President Napolitano, asking him to refrain from assisting Ratzinger in evading justice. |

The aspects of the structure and hierarchy of the church that might have contributed to the issue in the past, and how the church can now officially respond to the issue.

I guess what is bothering me is that I have known and talked to Catholics in my life, and I don't believe that any of them would approve or condone the behavior in the least. I have had some limited exposure to the functional structure of Catholic organizations as well and I don't believe that there is anything in particular inherent in that structure that would lead to this type of behavior. I'm tempted to just write this off as the corruption that power brings, but I find that I lack intimate knowledge or understanding of the Vatican.

I just finished watching the movie. My initial thoughts are that it's good and I recommend it, but with some qualifications due to several misrepresentations (misrepresentations are bound to happen with a movie about the Catholic Church's organization that attempts to fit five decades into 1 hours and 45 minutes, but I don't presume that the director intentionally misrepresented in the instances). The movie rightly hits on some true villains within the Church, and it also hits soundly on some structural problems in the Church. I also think, in its attempt to be highly prescriptive, that it makes some far-reaching conclusions that come up empty. I can flesh these out later, after more time. It also misses explaining some structural problems in the Church. I also think the legal crusade that is featured in the last 15 minutes is an extremely weak way to end it, because the legal case is really embarrassing from a legal standpoint. Yet, it gives the false hope that there's something there. The victims seem genuinely excited and comforted about the possibility of winning big in a court case against the Pope (whichever Pope it is, doesn't seem to matter). The lawyer is presented as the true savior of the victims, as if anything written by this guy becomes the final word (nice portrayal of lawyers, but unfortunately, a court brief is neither the final word, nor necessarily the truth of the matter).

Let's just reflect here on your apparent hate for someone you have no clue about. You don't know enough about him to judge him. You only project onto him your view of his position and religion. He never had a fair shot with you. And I think the quality of fairness is a necessary quality of a decent human being.

So what's your assessment of Ratzinger after watching it? Would you seriously have wanted him to continue in the role of the pope after viewing this? I know your focus is going to be on the church and its needs as shown by your responses to the film.
I choose to focus more on the victims and I'm afraid I'm unwilling to have any compassion for a man that is literally 1,000 times worse than Joe Paterno. What was done was disgusting and vile. Both by a organization riddled with pedophiles and those that covered it up. I truly hope someday you can shed your blinders and see this for what it is. For 500 years the church has been saying "we're not like that now we've changed. " But have they? I don't think so, I think its a corrupt little fiefdom, largely supported by brainwashed laypeople. The catholic church has had 2000 years to refine it's brainwashing, find key mental leverage points, develop rules and a hierarchy system that protects itself and its perks above all else.

The movie did nothing to change my current view of Pope Benedict XVI. He is a great, but not perfect, man who inherited a mess, not created it.
I am happy for him in his resignation, and I hope it brings a much deserved peaceful rest. My only regret is that I will never be able to see him in person. |

I spoke to a family friend who was a Monseigneur and he advised me not to become a priest. He said the seminaries were filled with sickos and homosexuals. Men in the Seminary changed around the early 60s perhaps sooner like mid 50's, until even today - if you were friendly to tradition you were ousted. Many many lost vocations. We have come to the culmination of the heresy of modernism What the previous popes warned about. As a Catholic our faith is not in the pope it is in Jesus. The Gates of hell will not prevail - so many governments have tried to "take care" of the Catholic church. Not to say that the church is perfect as it is run by men - and what seems like for some time now someof these men are those that have actively harmed children, hurt the faithful, and shamed the church. The issue of abusing kids is not a strictly Catholic issue, the problem was those that wanted to harm kids found a welcome home in the Catholic seminaries and now those men are our bishops. So many bad popes through history, but when it came to matters of the faith I trust the Holy Spirit to guide whomever is the leader of the worlds billions of Catholics. ![]() |
