We Spent $52 Billion On Our Pets Last Year

If we outlawed pets and taxed that money away from citizens instead, we could fund about 2/3 of the SNAP program.

We Spent $52 Billion on Our Pets Last Year
February 25, 2013 2:20 pm
http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/smar...rtnewspetmoney

Last year, Americans spent an estimated $52 billion on our pets—more than on both coffee and bottled water combined, according to a report issued by the American Pet Products Association.

Data stretching back to 1994 shows a clear trend: Americans are spending more on their pets than ever before. Even during the recession, spending leveled rather than dropped, a sign of just how much millions of Americans love their furry friends. If the past is any predictor of the future, that spending will only continue to rise in years to come.

It’s clear that most of our money goes into food and health care. But The Atlantic points out that grooming and treats should not be taken lightly. The $6.2 billion we spent on those two categories represents more money than Facebook made in advertising revenue last year.

The Atlantic breaks down the billions into its component parts and tracks how our wallets’ love for pets has grown over the years:

True, they might do that 13 days in a row. But on the 14th day, they're charging into a burning building to save somebody's life.

I was also on the fire party when I was in the Navy. Been to the naval firefighting school, actually fought a couple of real fires, although none were really serious.

My dog lays on my feet, and is friendly to me. That's why I pay for her food.

Obama voters don't do anything but scream and complain. That's why I don't want to pay for their food.

It's a foolish and desperate attempt to demonize people on gov't assistance and people who have a different view from you WRT: progressive taxation.

That's hilarious, and gives me an insight into your mindset. Stop and look at the data. Just try to absorb the info without a political agenda warping your opinions. I'm assuming that the two numbers are accurate. Around 50 billion dollars spent on our pets, and around 75 billion dollars spent on the SNAP program.

If you actually wanted to do that you wouldn't have posted the first sentence in the OP the way you did. Not all rhetoric needs to be explicit.

I don't understand your point. What do people spend on professional sports every year? Imagine what we could pay for with that. There are all kinds of stupid shit people spend money on. I could give a shit less what someone spends their money on~

I posted that comment because it amused me. Sometimes I'm a sarcastic asshole. How do you react when you consider that as a society we willingly spend about 2/3 of the SNAP budget on animal companions?

We should spend every dollar possible helping the poor people live better lives. That will probably motivate you & I to get up even earlier, work even later, and live even more meager than we already do. All in the name of supporting those who don't.

In fact I'm going to start tonight by matching dollar-for-dollar everything that Listo plans to donte to food charities from his own pocket. I have $3.76 in change in my car, that should probably cover it.

Would you like me to send you a bill? You'd probably be able to match my dollar contributions but I'd be more interested in getting people to donate their time, as I have done for the last 25 years or so.

from his last post I think it is clear he was just being ornery and pointing out the irony of the numbers~
