Hunters across Louisiana are outraged after state health officials ordered a rescue mission to destroy $8,000 worth of deer meat because venison is not allowed to be served in homeless shelters.

The Dept. of Health and Hospitals ordered the staff at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission to throw 1,600 pounds of donated venison in garbage bins – and then ordered then to douse the meat with Clorox – so other animals would not eat the meat.
“Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana,” said a Health Dept. official in an email to Fox News.

It is sad how the dumbest folks in the country are in charge of it, and few americans even detect this.

Anybody know an actual reason for this rule? Just a guess--meat must go through USDA requirements, and I'm guessing that there aren't many deer slaughterhouses meeting USDA requirements.

Maybe they don't just want someone bringing in a slab of deer to feed people without knowing it has been prepared properly as with most beef or pork they might receive.

you could even mention it was poisoned with anthrax. but it would have nothing to do with the explanation given by local authorities.

The local authority said, "Deer meat is not permitted to be served in a shelter, restaurant or any other public eating establishment in Louisiana."

So it is a state law, and I don't believe it is unique. I'm asking why and guessing it has something to do with regulations against serving meat not meeting USDA requirements to the public.

I think a lot of states have what is called a deer exchange program for the hungry. In Nebraska I believe it is run through the game & parks.

It's stupid.

Iowa has a program called "HUSH". Hunters donate any extra deer to a locker and it's processed and given to food pantries, poor people and prisons.

If you think deer meat is gross, you've never had a fresh loin, marinated, seasoned and grilled, cubed and dipped in melted butter and garlic salt.....or cubed oil fried venison...or butterfly fillets.....or ground deer chili........or fresh jerky.

So it's a state-run/sponsored program? So it probably has some requirements that the meat has to meet.

We should probably get rid of food regulations. Most productive countries have no regulations for meat served to the public, right?

Leave it to cosmos to defend industrial sludge for food instead of fresh meat.
