I'd go for the short term pain over the long term one.

Cassel would be benched mid season and we'd be back where we are here next year.

Alex Smith will be 5 years of mediocrity and maybe 1-2 playoff births. When it's all said and done? Everybody is fired and team has to go in a different direction. Oh and we'll be drafting probably #17 that year in that rebuild.

Smith is clearly worse than Cassel. Not because there's a huge talent difference but because since he's younger people will think they can spend more time 'developing' him. Thus wasting even more time where this team could actually be trying to win a championship.

Hey maybe we'll get lucky and he'll be like Steve Young. But frankly I think this move may have actually finally gotten me to stop watching football. Not once in my lifetime has this team really been serious about trying to win a championship. Montana era is probably the only borderline period.....
