Probably because A) They didn't play college or pro ball B)Didn't have a connection C) Decided to go into a career path that paid more immediately or D) Didn't want to work as a scout, quality control coach, position coach, etc.

There are several people on this website that could definitely work as scouts (most scouts are pretty incompetent and products of both personal/professional nepotism).

The world is filled with billions of talented people that could have done incredible or more worthy things if they'd chosen a different path or things had fallen a certain way.

I really hope Alex Smith works out. For what we gave up, he needs to play better than he ever has for us to end up winning the trade.

It sure would be nice to actually enjoy watching football again.

Unfortunately, I have a strong feeling that we are putting our dicks back in the meat grinder.

It's one thing to criticize a track record of failure. Any Monday morning GM can do that. It's entirely different to declare a guy a failure before he even completes his first season just because he traded a draft pick for a vet QB instead of drafting the peanut gallery favorite college prospect. Seriously, there's quite a bit of territory between "no criticism allowed" and "any GM who doesn't share my most cherished opinions is a moron".

And we are not talking scouts. We are talking Head Coach and GM.

Here is the trouble with that argument.

I could have been a surgeon but instead took another career path. Because of that choice I didn't spend my last 24 years working in the field, so I can read medical journals and watch surgery after surgery but I am not a surgeon and do not have that applicable ability in the real world. Even if I know what I think the surgeon should or could do.

Funny how the arm chair "experts" don't understand this simple concept but could run an NFL franchise on a whim.

That's stretching the analogy a bit. However, there IMO is no replacement for years spent evaluating players on the field, from stands/elevated views, and then comparing it with film to a point where you get a true feel for game speed and several other factors.

As an extremely base example, John Harbaugh's reaction to Te'o's 40. That's his reaction without looking at the time and just watching the player run. That's years of experience and trained skills coming into play.

I do think that there are several people here that could have been talented scouts and could have moved upwards (I don't know anybody here outside of CP so I can't personally attest to their personalities/demeanor). I don't know if any could have been coaches but there are starting to be more coaches that weren't exceptional players/didn't play past HS or at all in the NFL (exceptionally rare though). I do know that there is at least one former scout here.

Not saying they "couldn't have been" but that can't replace the fact they aren't.

Earlier it occurred to me when this subject was brought up, ***** knows more about football than anyone on CP, I don't doubt that for a minute.

Unfortunately his knowledge led him to believe he could do things "different" or "better" which was his downfall. In other words his ego got in the way of his brain.

Knowing things is not the end all be all, being able to apply the knowledge is the key.

I doubt many here have that ability as well.

I know of two football coaches on the Planet. But, both are in the closet and I will not out them here.
