It's superfluous nature leads me to think that it may have been intended to tarnish the new Pope, but maybe it was just an innocent remark. In any event, the fact that this was reported, presumably without giving any other Catholic bishops the opportunity to present a different view in order to take away the possibility that readers would see it as the view of the Catholic Church seems kind of shoddy to me.
