The media has been showing a great deal of ignorance in their coverage so far though. Not ONE mention of St Francis Xavier on either CNN or FOX.

I wondered who the "Francis" was for but just put it aside. Too much hype right now.

Argentine Cardinal Named in Kidnap Lawsuit

VATICAN CITY — A human rights lawyer has filed a criminal complaint against an Argentine cardinal mentioned as a possible contender to become pope, accusing him of involvement in the 1976 kidnappings of two priests.

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio's spokesman Saturday called the allegation "old slander."

The complaint filed in a court in the Argentine capital on Friday accused Bergoglio, the archbishop of Buenos Aires, of involvement in the abduction of two Jesuit priests by the military dictatorship, reported the newspaper Clarin. The complaint does not specify the nature of Bergoglio's alleged involvement.

Under Argentine law, an accusation can be filed with a very low threshold of evidence. A court then decides if there is cause to investigate and file charges.

The accusations against Bergoglio, 68, are detailed in a recent book by Argentine journalist Horacio Verbitsky.

In May 1976, priests Orlando Yorio and Francisco Jalics were kidnapped by the navy. They surfaced five months later, drugged and seminude, in a field.

At the time, Bergoglio was the superior in the Society of Jesus of Argentina.

They mentioned Xavier on CNN as an Evangelist and speculated that the new pope will want to spread the faith even further.....briefly mentioned but mentioned.

Well that's a start at least. I've been flipping back and forth and the coverage has been really disappointing.

It was a facinating class for a kid.

Ok it's official.. he chose the name to honor St. Francis of Assisi.. of course no one in the media knew that until a few minutes ago when Vatican spokesman the Rev. Tom Rosica confirmed it. So it was sloppy journalism up to that point even if they got lucky and were right. Rosica also confirms that it is Pope Francis.. NOT Pope Francis I

The Vatican confirmed that he's pope Francis, not Francis I.

The fact that he's a Jesuit is a pretty big deal, the Jesuits are one of the most liberal orders of priests, especially in the US. They tend to rebel a bit against tradition and ceremony, in favor of just being pragmatic and going out to the people to preach. If any pope ever chose to end priest celibacy, it would probably be either a Jesuit or a 3rd-worlder.

This particular Jesuit might not be a moderate though, from what I'm reading.
