I would guess that the point is that your beliefs, especially those with the intent of affecting others, should be objective, without bias, rather than one formed by something tragic that happened to you...because that event has you seeing things from a clouded vantage point.

For example, I'm a legislator who lost their child to drowning in my backyard pool; now I don't think anyone should have a backyard pool, and to protect them, I'm going to do my best to outlaw them, although many people already have them, because of what happened to me.

What about policy makers who have actually fought in combat who because of their experiences who tread carefully and cautiously before asking young men and women to risk their lives as opposed to the chickenhawks who had other priorities when it was their turn to serve?

If that policymaker was extreme with their viewpoints (we should never go to war) I'd say the same applies, but I certainly see you're saying...and I'm also not arguing this is a flawless viewpoint...just the rationale of it.
