Invasion of Iraq 10 years later: Good move or mistake

10 years ago today the US invaded Iraq to overthrow the regime of Saddam Hussein. The after-effects of that decision are still being felt to this day, and obviously will continue to play out in the years and decades to come. At this milestone, however, knowing everything that you know now, should we have gone in, or not?

Regrets and hypotheticals aren't really the goal here. We could go on and on (and have, many times) about how the post-invasion situation was handled, etc. ad infinitum. You should vote simply on the facts as they have actually occurred over the last 10 years.

Poll forthcoming. Note that it will be a public poll.

Not just your generation. I buried 3 of my friends all my age.
One was a female & we were good friends. I was all for ****ing up some M.E country after 9/11. Then she was blown away by a IED. My thought process changed instantly

So not our hands, just the hands of oil companies?

It's not a straight yes or no answer.

Based on the information that we had at the time, I don't feel guilty for being in favor of it. And if we look at Iraq today, we did accomplish our objectives in large part. Regime change was accomplished, t's not a rogue state, not a SSOT, etc. I think we fought with an arm tied behind our backs in some ways too, and it could have been executed better in that respect.

I said this in another thread though, I think we overestimated the willingness of people in the Islamic world to join the rest of us in the 21st century. I think our noble dream of fixing things over there was too optimistic. We can't just give the culture a hand up out of the 6th century, they have to want to be ruled democratically and join the civilized world at the table. It doesn't seem like they desire that. When you turn elections over in that part of the world you end up with Hamas or the Muslim Brotherhood in power.

Maybe they aren't ready for it.

I tend to agree with this. I opposed the decision from the very beginning, but I do think George W. Bush sincerely believed everything he said when he was laying out the whole WMD argument.

The problem is, when you go out on a limb like that, you need to be right. He wasn't.

The war blew up in our faces even though we were successful in toppling Hussein's regime. It cost us a helluva lot of money and it gave the Islamic radicals a quintessential example of "American Imperialism" that they could rally around and use to recruit an entire new generation of terrorists.

Horrible, horrible decision.

Sadly, the gains we made possible in Iraq have been undermined and squandered by Obama, democrats, isolationists, and Americans who wouldn't be able to stomach what this country went through to save the world in WWII if we had to do it again.

It's shocking that a task force looking into national energy policy would have studied global energy sources. I'm flabbergasted!

I want to visit the alternate reality you live in one day.

Is the secret to entrance only getting my news from conservative talk radio?

You comparison of the Iraq war to WWII is cute.
