Health Conspiracy

I figured that I would post this here since there's a lot of conspiracy fans knocking about.

So a year ago I go in for a routine physical and the first thing that they find is high blood pressure. BP has never been an issue for me as I'm usually 120/80. This test had me at 145/95.

I had gained a couple of pounds so I figured it wasn't impossible. So I set off on a bunch of lifestyle changes. I lost 50 lbs (I'm what I weighed when I was 19), got down to 15% body fat and I'm in the best shape of my life. Even better then my time in the military.

During the last year or so I've had a home BP monitor that I check every couple of days and my BP has remained high even with all of the other improvements.

Earlier this week I went in for another physical and it was an old nurse who did an old fashion BP check and she put me at 110/60. I told her what I was usually seeing at home and she strapped on their automated BP checker and it said 140/80. She manually checked my left arm and it was 110/60. She took me to a different machine and it said 145/90. She mentioned it to the doctor and he said the machines are more accurate and said she shouldn't be checking manually. Later in the meeting he recommended BP medication.

My MIL is a nurse so I had her manually check me yesterday and I was 110/65.

Step 1 - fire that doctor.
Step 3 - Profit.

The other issues that probably doesn't mean anything is cholesterol. A year ago I was 230 in total cholesterol and after getting it tested on my own a couple of weeks ago I was at 170. This would make sense with all of the weight loss except that I lost that weight be eliminating "heart healthy grains" and eating a high fat diet.

Is it possible that doctors are rigging the system to push more drugs?

The other reason for our overmedicated society is because we're lawsuit happy. If the doc does it right and tries to have you log over time before issuing drugs that can be good. But if you were to have an event that were related to high blood pressure at that time then the doc could get his ass sued off for actually trying to do the right thing. Sometimes drugs are prescribed when they might not be warranted to keep the lawyers off their back.

Or we could be overmedicated largely b/c the FCC allowed drug companies to peddle their wares on TV beginning in the mid-90s...

You'll get no disagreement from me there. The average person has absolutely no business suggesting what drugs they need. But the other trend is massive bribery by drug reps to docs which works too. So it's hard to say which system is better or worse....

You are right that it's overdetermined. Personally, I think the nature of our society is so imbalanced that it requires that you be unhealthy to function. We shouldn't need stimulants to function, but people pump themselves full of caffeine just to make it to their vehicles.

Good for you. Don't know what archaic, inefficient field you're entering, but hopefully it's successful.

Nobody gave a **** about "gluten free" or "wheat allergy" 30 years ago.

It's all a scam.

****, it's practically "cool" to be gluten free today. Oh yeah, I'm gluten free, look at me!

Further reinforcing my point. You assume that the field is archaic and inefficient based upon what? The heft of the reading list?

Perhaps that suggests (unsurprisingly lost on you) that there are fields of considerable more depth, complexity, difficulty and intellectual nuance than becoming a medical doctor.

The irony is that it's ****ing over a lot of people with Coeliac disease. Since there are so many imposters the implicit assumption is that it's a choice rather than a medical requirement.

I'll dig up an op-ed from a person w/ a real gluten sensitivity when I come back from a midnight milk and diaper run (FML).

Here's a serious question for you. You just seem.... vile. Maladjusted, hateful, pompous, awful - I mean, if you have a single redeeming characteristic, you certainly haven't demonstrated it here. So why the **** would you want to be a healer? I mean, is it just the money? Golf in the afternoons? Are you a serial killer, and want medical training to hone your skills? I guess that would make sense. But seriously, you, a doctor?

You might want to rethink things.

Nope, it just suggests that you are trying to cram information by using books instead of alternative (and more efficient, as evidence has shown) learning methods.

Keep reading your books!
