MTD's all underrated prospects team.

You can check here for entire articles on each position.

It's a pretty good read.

Here's the team they assembled so far (they have yet to go over passrushers, linebackers or secondary):

QB Zac Dysert, Miami (OH)
QB Tyler Bray, Tennessee
QB Ryan Griffin, Tulane
RB Christine Michael, Texas A&M
RB Zac Stacy, Vanderbilt
RB Miguel Maysonet, Stony Brook
WR Mark Harrison, Rutgers
WR Quentin Sims, Tennessee-Martin
WR Stedman Bailey, West Virginia
TE Justice Cunningham, South Carolina
TE Nick Kasa, Colorado
OT Xavier Nixon, Florida
OT/OG Hugh Thornton, Illinois
OG J.C. Tretter, Cornell
DT Montori Hughes, Tennessee-Martin
DT Josh Boyd, Mississippi State
DT Omar Hunter, Florida

Bailey, Nixon and Kasa aren't underrated by anybody from what I've seen.

Hell, Bailey is probably a second rounder.

And Josh Boyd has a lot of press/attention going right now.

Bray and Dysert most likely won't be there after the third.

Not really an underrated team, IMO.

I agree.

QB: Colby Cameron, LA Tech
RB: Khiry Robinson, West Texas A&M
RB: Rex Burkhead, Nebraska
FB: Braden Wilson, Kansas State
TE: Jake Stoneburner, Ohio State
OT: Jordan Mills, La Tech (because I think he's a 2nd-day talent)
OG: Lamar Mady, Youngstown St.
C: Joe Madsen, West Virginia
OG: Josh Dworaczyk, LSU
OT: Manase Foketi, Kansas State via West Texas A&M
WR: Chad Bumphis, Mississippi St.
WR: Marquess Wilson, Wash St. (guy was 1st rounder last offseason, got burned by crazy Mike Leach now he's borderline draftable? He's better than that.)

4-3 LDE: Armonty Bryant, East Central (OK)
4-3 RDE: Travis Johnson, San Jose St.
4-3 DT: Chris Jones, Bowling Green
4-3 DT: Joe Vellano, Maryland
4-3 OLB: Etienne Sabino, Ohio State
4-3 MLB: Jordan Campbell, New Mexico Highlands
4-3 OLB: Ja'Gared Davis, SMU (played 3-4 OLB in college, but 6'0", 238#)

3-4 DE: AJ Francis, Maryland
3-4 NT: Byron Jerideau, South Carolina
3-4 DE: Brandon Moore, Texas
3-4 OLB: Brandon Sharpe, Syracuse
3-4 OLB: Travis Long, Washington St. (or Brandon Thurmond if he doesn't count)
3-4 ILB: Taylor Reed, SMU
3-4 ILB: (don't have a particular candidate here... don't think Vince Williams qualifies really)

CB: Kayvon Webster, South Florida (I think he has pick 50-100 ability)
CB: Travis Howard, Ohio State
FS: Rontez Miles, California (Pa)
SS: Ray Ray Armstrong, Miami (not sure Cody Davis still qualifies)

That was fun. JMO.

.
These are all really stupid distinctions. Why don't you say what position they actually play in regards to technique and then state what kind of principles they typically play. Not every 4-3 DE/DT has the same responsibilities. Same for 3-4 DEs. Additionally, you failed to elaborate which ILB position in a 3-4 Taylor Reed would play (I know but there are people here that don't).

I don't mean to bitch at you and generally, I like your post more than the OPs link. However, I really hate the monikers of 4-3 DT or 3-4 DE or 3-4 ILBs without discussing A) What technique/position they'll primarily play and B) not acknowledging different philosophies/schemes that the prospect would be better suited for.

Well, here's the thing about that... I agree with you to an extent, but it gets super-complicated that way.

There are 4-3 defenses which use the two DTs interchangeably and 4-3 defenses which use a 1-tech NT and a 3-tech UT. Then, there are 3-4s that are one-gap and 3-4s that are two-gap (like Crennel). A two-gap 3-4's DEs are pretty interchangeable on the left and right.

For my examples, I was going with a 4-3 where the DTs are essentially the same role and a two-gap 3-4. If you wanted to line up Vellano and Jones as a UT and a NT, I'd put Vellano at the 3T.

If you're running a one-gap 3-4, Jerideau could probably play NT in that role as well. He played a one-gap 4-3 NT at South Carolina and showed some penetration skills in the NFLPA game when he lined up as a UT.

Taylor Reed played WILB in SMU's defense, but not every 3-4 has a distinct WILB/SILB distinction. SF's ILB are a bit more interchangeable and it matters a lot what kind of personnel you have up front. A good front line frees up your LBs to roam more.

So, while I get your protest, it just gets waaay too complicated, at least for a random post on a message board.

Well, yes it gets complicated. However, if you're ever going to evaluate prospects correctly, you have to do it to the smallest detail. Additionally, the details I requested aren't that difficult to ascertain, especially if one is running their own draft sire (which IIRC, you do).

As far as the rest of your post goes, you say this " I was going with a 4-3 where the DTs are essentially the same role". So, you're going to have double shaded 1 for your DTs? That doesn't make any sense. Even if you're using a w9 alignment as your base front, you're typically still going to have one of your DTs play 2gap principles.

As for the other parts in your post, I agree for the most part, especially the latter about 3-4 ILBs.
