JERSEY SHORE-- A Toms River 6-year-old who was shot in the head by a 4-year-old was reportedly in serious condition Tuesday, according to Toms River police.

Other weapons were found at the scene of the Monday night shooting that occurred in the McCormick Drive yard of the 4-year-old, according to Toms River Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.

Mastronardy said that the boy obtained a .22 caliber rifle from inside the residence. The state Division of Youth and Family Services were also called to the scene because there were three other children in the home.

The parents were "nearby" when the incident occurred, the chief said. The mother of the 4-year-old called 911.

The 6-year-old was flown to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune with a head injury and was in serious condition, the chief said.

The shooting occurred in the Cedar Grove area of the township, according to Toms River schools Assistant Superintendent James Hauenstein, who received the news during a New Jersey School Boards Association meeting Monday night.

The children were outside the home when the 4-year-old boy went inside to get the rifle, and then shot the 6-year-old about 15 yards away, the chief said. Mastronardy did not say if the 4-year-old pulled the trigger, or if the rifle accidentally discharged.

The 4-year-old's parents were home at the time, but no names have been released.

Authorities were on scene at a McCormick Drive home Monday night and had the yard cordoned off with yellow tape. Toms River police and county vehicles remained on the scene.

Hauenstein said that the victim is a student at Saint Joseph's Grade School. He said that Toms River schools officials will be available to provide counseling services to students at Cedar Grove Elementary and Saint Joseph's.

Toms River Police Department Detectives Louis Santora and Roger Hull are investigating along with the Ocean County's prosecutor's office and sheriff's department, Mastronardy said.

I'm for gun rights. But if you as a parent are so irresponsible that a child can find a way to get to your gun, you should get the hammer of the law. Am I alone here?
Nope. Others on this board see no real issue here but you're not alone.

I'm sorry it upsets you.
And we're sorry that you won't ever get to the point where guns are illegal and taken from people's homes. I know you think that tide is somehow turning, but it's not. You can post as many threads as you want about people getting killed; guns will be legally available long after you're dead.

You might want to read the news.

Personally, I think the price of a few dead children is worth preventing people like you from giving away the freedom of all American children. I'm in favor of allowing people to continue to own swimming pools too.

I don't think many people use swimming pools to kill other people. I think you're missing the point here.

Not at all. We just get upset that the "other side" uses this kind of tragedy to push their agenda and remove blame from people and put it on objects.

How does your defective little brain generate enough energy for you to even function? What does my desire to exercise my constitutional rights have to do with this? Nothing. Did I leave that gun unattended? No. Was it my gun? No. Was I anywhere near this place? No. You assign blame to everybody but the guilty, and then think it makes you champion of the internet. What a complete ****ing joke you are.

The only thing that upsets me is deplorable scum like you getting their rocks off over children dying. I have never interacted with a more disgusting degenerate. Your existence is an affront to all of humanity.

I think the gun control lobby is a bit more upset on the revenue being created by gun dealers and gun manufacturers by ignoring laws that prevent them from making such enormous profits.

Maybe if some of you guys actually read through the proposed legislation you'd see this.

Instead all anyone around here does is immediately shuts down and moves on. Not exactly they way things are supposed to work.

I'm showing you stories of children dying daily from gun ownership in the home.

You choose to ignore them.

You're letting them die in vain and it's sad.

It's not going to be happening anymore.

Don't pretend you're here for some serious debate. Your posts are almost always obnoxious, almost always include sweeping generalizations, and aren't intended as some sort of respectful discourse.
So spare us the notion that you're trying to have some sort of reasonable conversation and other people are thwarting you.
You act like a douche, so don't act surprised when people respond in kind.

No, I think you're trying to change the point. It's weird that you care so much about kids who die from gunshots but have no sympathy for the poor children who drown in easily preventable accidents each year.

How so? I posted for everyone to watch 60 minutes which gave a real angle on gun control and reasonable steps that can be taken in order to prevent tragedies similar to Newtown from occurring again.

There's a gun problem in America that needs to be addressed. I'm not going to let children die in vain no matter how much you want that to happen.

They don't count unless they're shot. Haven't you been paying attention?

Burned to death? Please.

Starved? Where's the fun in that?

Car wreck? Those are for amateurs.

Fell out a window? Get out of here with that shit.

But a bullet to the head of a six-year-old child? That's popcorn for Wickedson's dark little soul.
