Which means in 2 or 3 years after the next thing comes out and traffic drops that game is worthless...
What's odd is the jump in HD space for me. If we're supposed to be going to this digital life, and these systems can house basically any digital medium out there, then how do they expect us to keep all these games on our HD when they're each ~ 50G. Then coming out with a report that atm PS4 doesn't support external storage, just kind of a headscratcher considering you can get a 2TB HD for nothing nowadays.

I would guess they - or at least MS will - is going to push more for cloud storage.

Good point, how could I forget about the cloud. That makes a ton of sense considering SSD are the future for HD's and they are expensive as hell compared to a 7200 RPM Seagate or similar.

Don't get me wrong, I understand. It's baffled me how MS could charge so damn much for a 100GB HDD yet you can go out and get one for so cheap. But, cloud storage is the way for everything. Everything has to be accessible to you everywhere you are no matter what you are on or what you are doing.

No you can't leave your video games at home. Take them with you damnit.

The Kinect is the anchor that sinks the Xbox One’s resolution
Published on November 5th, 2013

As the new consoles quickly approach, individual big-budget games are receiving their customary multiplatform comparisons. A continuing trend among the few next-gen multiplatform game comparisons you may have noticed is that the Xbox One outputs natively in 720p, while the PS4 outputs in either 1080p or 900p. The reason for this may surprise you.

While it’s nice to know which game will perform and look better on next-gen consoles, consistent trends among the different comparisons reveal more than just which console runs each game best. They also reveal underlying traits of the consoles themselves. Recently, an internet ruckus was caused when the folks over at Digital Foundry did their usual in-depth comparison of Battlefield 4 for the PS4 and Xbox One. They found that the Xbox One version natively output at 720p and upscaled to 1080p, while the PS4 version natively output at the higher resolution of 900p and upscaled to 1080p. The result of this was that the Xbox One version was more aliased; Digital Foundry also found that, overall, the PS4 version of the game performed a little better. Then, word broke that the upcoming Call of Duty: Ghosts would also natively output at 720p on the Xbox One, while the PS4 would natively output at 1080p. Mark Rubin, Infinity Ward developer, noted that in order to get the game running at 60fps on the Xbox One, it would have to output at the lower 720p.

This, of course, paints the Xbox One as an underpowered console, and while that may be the case (if only slightly), that doesn’t mean it’s so underpowered that it can’t handle a native output of 1080p running at 60 fps. In response to the internet ruckus, Digital Foundry dove back into the Xbox One and found that, actually, the console is powerful enough to reach that output and frames-per-second, but the Kinect is actually sapping the power the console needs in order to reach that desired output.

Around 10% of the Xbox One’s GPU time is dedicated to functions on the operating system level, particularly Kinect tracking. This percentage of GPU resources is inaccessible to developers. So, it’s not that the Xbox One is significantly underpowered, it’s that developers cannot use the whole of the console’s resources because they’re reserved for functions other than games.

In modern times, we don’t really have dedicated devices anymore. We use our phones for just about everything — reading, gaming, music, TV and movies, and even (surprisingly!) making phone calls sometimes. Our PS3 and Xbox 360 are our primary Netflix machines, and even our PS Vita and Nintendo 3DS have non-gaming, media-focused apps. So, Microsoft isn’t exactly in the wrong for wanting to shore up its next-gen console’s non-gaming capabilities.

However, in the long run, when the Kinect is inevitably underused for gaming and UI and is primarily relegated to being a voice-activated power button, that reserved 10% will come back and bite Microsoft in the butt. This will especially be the case when we get further into the PS4′s lifecycle, and the games begin to look much better than they did at launch. Microsoft could eventually relent on their Kinect initiative and maneuver those 10% of resources back into the hands of game developers.

As we saw with the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation, though, even when a console is underpowered and a pain to develop for, developers eventually find their stride and the console catches up — as the PS3 did with the Xbox 360, both in terms of quality titles and overall sales. Until then, these comparisons where the PS4 performs better than the Xbox One should become the norm.

The upcoming multiplatform video game, “Destiny,” may not look the same on the PS4 and Xbox One. According to a report by Gear Nuke on Nov. 3, a tester who got to play an alpha version of the shared-world shooter disclosed that the multiplatform video game has better graphics on Sony’s new console when compared to Microsoft’s next-generation system.

The individual stated that the PS4 version of “Destiny” looks sharper than the Xbox One iteration, suggesting that the video game will have resolution differences between the two platforms. He also hinted that players will be able to spot the disparity with the upcoming multiplayer beta as the development team at Bungie is unlikely to make any major visual changes to the build.

You're not going to see much of a difference with first generation games. A majority of your early life titles will either be ports off of the 360/ps3 or 360/ps3 games that were converted into a new system title.

The difference will be very noticeable when games are designed specifically for the new consoles and developers have mastered the devkits.

Walmart will certainly have consoles available for people that didn't pre-order. Just ask someone with a clue in electronics (I wish you luck with this) how many of the PS4's they are receiving will be held back for non pre-orders. Beyond that, be prepared to spend about 6 or so hours camping.

Sony seems to be ontop of things when it comes to stock, but I think the demand is still going to outpace it.

Why not 4k capable- sets are coming out now. The damn Galaxy Note 3- a phone can already record video in 4k.

In about 2 years the price point for the tvs will be the option people buying new tvs will be looking at, and some content creators are already using 4k for projects so they have that resolution format available when it becomes more widely available- just like HD, DVD, and Blu Ray.

Also, if you sit at least 10 feet from the screen and don't have a tv over 50 inches, 720 and 1080 is not perceptibly different to the human eye- the scale goes inward and it's like at 8 feet and a 42 or 46 inch screen and so on and so on.
Most people this would apply to for normal watching habits, but gamers might have a tendency to sit close to their screen? And, we all know lcd, led, plasma unless it's made for use as a computer screen (different standard and quite a bit more expensive) that at close range the picture looks like crap.
Just another reason why I think the 4 and xbone will end up being updated / replaced in like 5 years.

On a side note: I was reading about 4k video and all, and my biggest question is delivery. A movie on blu ray if it was in 4k would take 200 discs to fit it all, and even the newest lossless compression standard for blu ray 8xDD would still need 50 blu ray disc for comparative data capacity needs.

I agree. I think that both PS & MS have an idea of what they REALLY want their consoles to be down the road and these versions are just stepping stones. Hell, MS was taking a bigger step initially, but everyone whined about the changes so they pulled everything they could. We ended up with what is basically a battle between the PS3 version 2.0 & the Xbox 360 version 2.0.

Four years would be ideal, and would really push gaming to another level, unlike the current gen which has lasted 3-4 years too long and evolution in gaming has been handicapped in that amount of time due to power and graphics limitations. We get entirely new generations of phones every 8-12 months, why can't we get new consoles every 4 years?

Yep its like they updated this last version to the SLIM, and in terms of this update its like SLIM 2.0.

Or to carry over from another popular tech item. This is the same as the iphone "S" update. Not the iphone 6 - just the 5S.

It takes 4 years before any system has a legit library of games.

There are also multiple reasons this isn't fiscally viable.
