Once the government decides that its role is to keep us safe, whether economically or physically, they can only do so by taking away our liberties. That is what happened in Boston." ~ Ron Paul

Civic ignorance

Justices Souter and O’Connor, Intelligence Agency Heads and Congressmen All Warn of Tyranny in America

Former Supreme Court Justice David Souter told University of New Hampshire School of Law that the “pervasive civic ignorance” in the U.S. could bring dictatorship:
I don’t worry about our losing a republican government in the United States because I’m afraid of a foreign invasion. I don’t worry about it because of a coup by the military, as has happened in some other places. What I worry about is that when problems are not addressed people will not know who is responsible, and when the problems get bad enough — as they might do for example with another serious terrorist attack, as they might do with another financial meltdown — some one person will come forward and say: ‘Give me total power and I will solve this problem.’

That is how the Roman republic fel. Augustus became emperor not because he arrested the Roman senate. He became emperor because he promised that he would solve problems that were not being solved.

http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2012/...tatorship.html
Yep! Had to quote a liberal there...but this point of his was a classically liberal point.

Former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O’Connor has also warned of dictatorship.

Actually I wouldn't. I firmly believe in your first amendment right to say all the stupid shit that you say. While I'm sure the Founders didn't exactly have the excrement that pours out of your mouth in mind when they fashioned the First Amendment, the principle remains.

If the Founding Fathers could see today's Youtube comments, they'd totally change their mind. You know it....

I think I'm laying down in the house and making them carry my ass out. Then I'm suing the shit out of them for an illegal search of my property, I'm going to make sure I get "hurt" in the process, and I'm suing them for that too. No warrant to come into my house? You can't come in unless I allow you to.

You have no idea -- none -- how hard it is to sue copes for violating your Constitutional rights. Generally what a violation of your Constitutional rights means is that evidence gathered by the illegal search cannot be used against you. It doesn't mean you're going to win a zillion dollars.

Your faking getting hurt means you've lost all right, forever, to complain about people who complain about fake injuries for insurance scams. You also can't complain about ambulance chasing lawyers since it seems you'd be happy to have one and scam the system.

May God have mercy on your soul...

Most people in this situation: Absolutely, anything I can do to help, officer.

Cops come in, ask if everyone would gather in the living room everyone and then proceed with their search.

If someone says no, you post people in position to view the property to make sure no one comes or goes while convince a judge for a search warrant.
This all the way. Anything else is a violation of privacy. If the perp had come to my house, and the cops had asked, I would have said yes, he's lying dead in the bathroom with a battery attatched to his testicles. You are free to come retrieve him.

I watched a great 1 hour documentary about the role of government and police; and what they are supposed to do.

the portion related to police was interesting. they interviewed a ton of police brass, lawyers etc and basically said it's not the job of the police to protect you. it's their job to enforce laws.

I found that interesting, and agreed with it.

Like I said, knock on the door and announce who you are and your intentions. Don't slamming on the door and shoving my family and I out the door with my hands up. You are on MY property, I'm not on yours. Act that way. They knew who they were looking for at that point, and it is obvious once I come to the door, that I aint him.

That's part of keeping everyone safe—those are called "safety nets."
